Hey, I just set up a server in a new datacenter, and I'd like to get a feel for transfer/response times to different areas. If some of you have a minute and would download this file and tell me where you're at, I'd really appreciate it.

The file is actually a 3D FreeCell game, but I haven't installed it myself so I can't comment. It's just a random file from download.com (File is 6.8 MB)

http://66.231.5.2/F3DSetup.exe

Let me know where you're located, what you get for a transfer rate, and ping times if convenient.

Thanks in advance!

that's using a 512/kbps cable modem, in Canada

Pretty good here in Kuwait.

it's staying at 19.6 KB/s on a 196 kbps DSL, its usually 20 KB/s.

Do you guys ever wonder if these speed tests aren't just invitations to partake in a DOS attack, or to use up some innocent person's bandwidth?

I know, I'm paranoid.

I am in Lahore, Pakistan on a 56kbps dial-up connection. I usually get the best results from Microsoft's servers. Your server speed has been better than Microsoft's server (as I said before, Microsoft's servers have been the fastest for me).

I never completed my download - but it was between 3.3 kbps and 5.2 kbps.

These are the ping results:
Pinging 66.231.5.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.231.5.2: bytes=32 time=2496ms TTL=242
Reply from 66.231.5.2: bytes=32 time=2501ms TTL=242
Reply from 66.231.5.2: bytes=32 time=2468ms TTL=242
Reply from 66.231.5.2: bytes=32 time=2493ms TTL=242

Ping statistics for 66.231.5.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 2468ms, Maximum = 2501ms, Average = 2489ms

From a server in northern Virginia, I get around 1,000 KB/s and 56 ms ping times.

From a server in Pennsylvania, I get around 800 KB/s and 71 ms ping times.

From my cable connection in central Texas, I max out at 250 KB/s with 87-115 ms ping times.

From Belgium:
Avg. d/l speed = 115Kbps
Top speeds = 150Kbps

Okay... But I can get a lot faster at CNET etc. :D

I know, I'm paranoid.

Only about 10 people usually participate at the best of times, if its comes in too slow ill normally cancel the transfer as i think most others will too.

If its people trying to DDOS attack a machine then damn theyre gonna need to post this to over 200 forums to even remotely slow down a machine.

the tests are done over a 24 hour period, therefore its normal that only ever 2 people will be downloading at the same time.

your question, are you paranoid, "YES" there are far better ways to DDOS a system that are far more effective.

:D sorry, did I sound a little harsh there, oops :)

Actually the paranoid part was a statement. I know, I'm paranoid. I was asking if anyone else wondered the same thing that I do. :)

Thanks for the reality check. I'll go cash it right now.

Thanks everyone who posted, I am pretty happy with how it looks. I have to assume I'm getting to a backbone or two fairly quickly, with some of the speeds other datacenters reported. I should have done this a long time ago! (Heh, not that I could afford it then.)

It's always good to be paranoid when it comes to security, but I doubt just posting an IP address makes you any more vulnerable. That sort of implies security through obscurity, which is relatively useless. You should assume every IP address is some group's favorite target. In fact, this block of IPs is brand new, never been routed from what I understand, and as soon as carriers started picking up the BGP routes, I started logging IIS/Code Red attacks. :)

Not to mention that being a new server, it's going to have the latest OS version and patches available, and no data on it yet, so it's gotta be the hardest target, but lowest data loss risk. And as for wasting bandwidth, it's a drop in the bucket really, and is just a cost of doing the test.

Anyway, thanks again for everyone's input!
