View Full Version : Crazy length of on-hold domains with NetSol

I had two old domain names hosted with Network Solutions/Verisign that I had decided not to bother re-registering. I had totally forgotten about them until I got an email from NetSol last week saying that they had just put both "on-hold" and that I should renew them now if I didn't want to lose the domains.

According to the email, one of the domains was 232 days overdue, the other domain was 649 days overdue!! Its renewal date was listed as early 2000

Crazy!

I've seen that before, i think people can take that domain at that point (anyone can register), it just doesen't scoot it out of the system. Dont ask me why it does that, but i've seen it before, i might be totally off though :)

In this case, I don't think so. The domain in question is doomstrife.com - I'm not able to register it from any of the places I've tried, for interest.

Strange, but then again, Netsol does some really strange thing, i'd strongly recommend not using them. I've seen them transfer domains when someone phoned them up, someone being NOT the domain owner, just some guy pretending to be them. Their procedures seem to be rather vague at times.

Anybody know if there's a regulartory body and/or policy enforcement body with whom the unfair practices of NetSol can be taken up?

I personally have seen six domains I wish to obtain and one expired at the end of 99.

The only place I know of that you can complain to is ICANN. And I doubt they take such complaints seriously.

What about a 'group action' against NetSol by going to ICANN together?

Write up a petition, and get a few thousand people to sign. Maybe that will get them to take notice. What you have to remember is, the majority of the world still thinks NSI is the only place you can get domains, and they are perfectly happy there. They have millions of customers, so it takes quite a lot to shake the tree.

Probably your best bet is to contact the BBB.

NetSol on-hold domains cannot be registered by anyone. They can generally be renewed by the domain owner - and even those 600+ days old can be renewed if you pay the back-due fees.

Domains cannot be registered until they have been dropped. There is no ICANN policy on how to handle expired domains, so registrars simply make up their own rules.

ICANN is the official oversight organization for domain name registrars, and they have a complaint process, but in the case of dropped domains, there are no rules, so complaints about how any given registrar handles these really have no impact. Not to say you should not report poor NetSol behavior (or any registrar for that matter) at icann.org, however don't expect any action around dropping expiring domains, since as I've said already, there are no rules.

Thanks for the info.

NetSols approach seems to be alright then. But if the peasants don't pay for their domains on time, wallop.

Don't get me wrong, I don't endorse NetSol's practice in any way - it's just that there don't appear to be any real options to get them to change it.

Hmmm... revolt? Rebellion?

Nah. Last time that happened in this country, it was over a number of 2-penny taxes... Man, what I wouldn't give to have that same spirit back. (Not a big fan of violence, but I hate to see people roll over when they get taken advantage of...)

I've been waiting on one NSI is holding since Oct 2000. Not as long as some of you guys, but maddening none the less.

I can't understand how netsol is able to 'hold' these expired domains for so long. Surely they pay a charge when they register a domain name so how come they are allowed to hold these names for nothing when they expire?
There must be something more that can be done than just complain to ICANN if ICANN refuses to do anything.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel after all....

It seems that in the last few days, about 5 domains that I registered with NameZero, and they registered with NetSol - have all dropped. The 'oldest expired' domain expired almost a year ago now ... but at least I'm free to re-register the domains after a long wait. :)
