View Full Version : Content Management Recommendations?
mperkel 05-01-2005, 10:59 AM I'm looking for a content management system for an online political magazine. This magazine comes out in issues and what's I'm looking for is something that can manages a "magazine" style system.
Looking for something free open source with a good community behind it to run on LAMP server. Must have good performance because it's a high traffic site. The site I'm trying to get this for is: http://www.bartcop.com
Basically each issue has a title top section and then a number of news articles that would be displayed in a vertical "blog style" format.
The guy who writes this site is very technically challenged so EASY is very important.
Been looking at Mambo and it looks promising but I can't quite figure it out myself as to just what all it does. Doesn't seem to be magazine oriented.
So - suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
pcrepairguy 05-01-2005, 08:46 PM try php nuke and mod it to how u want it. loads of free mods out there for it
Wazeh 05-01-2005, 09:18 PM Look at www.typo3.com

cdsadmin 05-02-2005, 12:07 AM Hi there, Dave here.
We use Mambo for almost all of our CMS needs these days.
You can play with a DEMO on my site if you want to play with it.
Do some searching on it as well. Great system.

Carlos 05-02-2005, 01:06 AM I have used a good number of CMS, and I would recommend Mambo. Search Google for a site called OpenSourceCMS. That site (which runs on Mambo) allows you to test the demos of a couple dozen open source CMSs. Playing with a demo will give you a good idea of the workflow. You might also Google for "CMS Matrix". That site allows you to compare numerous CMSs based on features.
Any CMS you pick will be "hard to get" at first, but with time, you will learn to love it (or hate it.)
My two yen is to stay away from the various Nukes. A few (which are slowly changing their name) are heading in better directions, but overall, I feel that security can be an issue, some projects are not run well (by the devs), and "Nuke-site" leaps right out at you. You'll find that Mambo has a good collection of templates with a wide range of looks, and that the devs conduct themselves vaery professionaly.
Cheers,
warrick 05-02-2005, 02:26 PM I recommend Mambo or phpNuke. They are different, but they are both very good.
visit cmsmatrix website its a great site with all cms reviews
Unicorn 05-02-2005, 09:52 PM Mambo is the thing you need :-)
henchster 05-03-2005, 02:06 AM well you can try subdreamer[.]com
dZ Evolution 05-03-2005, 03:01 AM Mambo is very powerful! I highly recommend it.
www.mamboserver.com

Cheers
Project X 05-04-2005, 01:50 AM mambo is about the most complicated thing i have ever attempted to use.
it was a support nitemare!
ubernostrum 05-04-2005, 05:56 AM For a largely text-oriented site, Textpattern (I'd post a link, but the forum complains I don't have enough posts yet to earn that privilege, just Google for it) is a great, straightforward CMS. You'll have to do a bit of configuration at the start (setting up some options for site organization, creating page templates, etc.), but it's really quite painless and there's a top-notch community support forum frequented by the developers.
Techno 05-04-2005, 11:36 AM I also like www.textpattern.com (http://www.textpattern.com). The site doesn't doesn't have an 'out-of-the-box' template but once you understand the logic it is easy to mod. It uses sections and categories that can be used to differentiate and style each issue. There are also a number of google-friendly and user-crafted url options. HTML & design knowledge is required to set up the templates but little is required of the end user. The support forum is quite active.
I haven't used www.wordpress.org in ages but that might also suit your purpose.
MH-Stefan 05-04-2005, 01:08 PM Mambo is all you need. I highly recommended.
TYPO3
1) flexible, any crazy desing with many columns and content blocks
2) you can generate static HTML pages with it - the best perfomance
mperkel 05-13-2005, 10:39 AM I've decided on Mambo. At first I didn't think it would work because the Admin interface is extremely confusing. But I stuck it out and it is indeed far more powerful that you would think at first.
MH-Stefan 05-13-2005, 11:36 AM Perfect decision.
Good luck! :)
iastron.com 05-14-2005, 12:34 AM what is mambo and where to find it ?
MH-Stefan 05-14-2005, 05:30 AM Mambo is one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Mambo is easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable.

traffictest 05-16-2005, 02:56 AM Mambo really sucks! It has the worst usability in the administration page,I recommend you Xoops.org.
It has lot of modules and easy to install and configurate them..nice templates as well..
mperkel 05-16-2005, 09:52 AM I almost came to the same conclusion. But I stuck with Mambo and it's working great. But the Admin does suck and is very confusing.
MH-Stefan 05-16-2005, 10:45 AM Yes, the Admin is sometimes confusing, but I got used to it. It's my personal favorite.
traffictest 05-16-2005, 02:30 PM Do you know that Xoops has its own macromedia extension to build your own themes?
myxoops.com
I love xoops.org
MH-Stefan 05-16-2005, 03:18 PM Mambo has that too. I think Xoops and Mambo are both great CMS', so everybody should choose the script that fits them better.
psarathy 05-17-2005, 08:31 AM mambo is nice one..
u can try runcms too..
or else .. u opt subdreamer..
anyway .. almost all the cms have nice themes avail on net..so u can jst pick the best one which u like
iatek 05-17-2005, 04:52 PM Do you have a preference in terms of platform -- PHP, ASP, etc.. ?
kpsservices 05-17-2005, 08:40 PM I like all the ones on Fantastico! Talk to webmsters of other political sites like Hannity.com and RushLimbaugh.com and NewsMax.com and ask what they like and have used....learn from the best and ask.
