Are cogent stingy when allocating ips, i currently have 10 assigned to one server and as all are in use (virtual dedicated server clients (FreeVSD) - 1 ip per virtual dedicated), i contacted the firm who I rent the box off and they are like "oh only like 4 ips per server, youve already got 10, cogent/arin would cause us problems if we allocated more to you" but im sure really that other hosts do not have this restriction? I palced thea rgument across that i had to have 1 ip per virtual dedicated and if they discussed this with arin/cogent they would surely understand, its not as if im doing virtual domain hosting with these ips, they are virtual servers!! The response from the firm I rent from was, "they would probably want you to change the software".

What do you guys think of this/?!?!

terra,

Cogent has tons of ip addresses (in the 5-6 digit range), and not that many customers right now. It shouldn't just be a matter of Cogent allocating though, if cogent isn't providing enough IP addresses, your data center should go directly to ARIN and ask for more. AFAIK almost everyone who runs virtual dedicated got 1-2 of their own ip's, so i fail to see how this wouldn't be justified, it's a lot more reasonable then what many people do (1 ip per webhosting account, etc.). I'd contact your data center and just tell this you require this to operate your business efficiently, it's very important, and if they want to keep you as a customer, they're going to have to help you out. Maybe if they know it's that important to you, they'll take a few extra minutes to see what they can whip up :D.

LOL, thanks terra, but my intent wasn't to incite a revolt... (evil eye), orrrr was it?

You dont really need to crack the whip over them, that rarely works unless you push a LOT of business through people. I know that if someone acts like that to my techs, i tell them to go elsewhere (i dont need anyone abusing my techs heh). But generally if you let these people know how important additional IP's are to your business, and its a make-or-break factor in you staying with them, they'll do it if they're smart/if they can.

We all have to put up with begging from arin and or upstream providers for IP's as a provider I will admit its a pain in the arse to get more IP's, and customers like to use IP's like their water.

BUT telling you 4 IP's per server is completely INSANE, Cogent and Arin will allocate additional IP's to your provider as long as they are keeping good records on how they are using them.

My guess is that if they go direct to cogent, they bought a cogent line for 1000.00 IE the non isp price, these lines are only supposed to be used for internal company internet access, and hence cogent will only give these people a handfull of IP's. If this is the case your out of luck, and can blame your provider for making a unethical business decision.

Now if this isnt the case then their just flat out lying to you, you can, we have, and all other cogent providers have and continue to be able to get 1000's of ips from cogent or arin as long as we the providers keep good records and do our best to conserve.

Either way you need to tell your provider how unacceptable this rediculous policy is.

Cogent is harder to get IP's from than ARIN is. We had to fight with them for two Class C's, and we're using a GigE connection to them.

jkehe: ouch, thats unfortunate to hear, beat them upside the head :). Maybe you just need to get someone else from service provisioning, give them a fancier network map, or find a girl with a sexy voice to ask really nicely :D.

Girls seem to work best :) but a sexy voice can only go so far. im sure the network admins at cogent are lonely, eventually their going to want to meet your sexy female to umm discuss IP allocation details. At that point utilizing a phone sex operator wouldnt work.

Perhaps jkehe you might go direct to arin, their fun to work with :) but if you spend a couple of days running around in circles with your left hand on top of your hand, yelling unlimiband unlimiband, they may be a bit more lienent. They like pretty network maps too. I think maybe they go and stick them on their refrigerator at home.

Lol, i didn't mean a phone sex operator. But i know where i used to work, if anyone wasn't nice to me, i'd put them on the phone with Lisa (who is a complete hottie, cute little redhead, and would beat me silly if she ever read this). But once she got on the phone, most everybody (male) was more agreeable, and i just got her to do my bidding, worked VERY well in frustrating cases.

Yeah, that will scare them. It has worked wonders for the host on the list. They are jumping through hoops to get off that blacklist seen by a few people who frequent here. :)

I didnt understand your post??? Also i saw no /begin sarcasm, if you want every version of your browser to be able to read your post please remember to utilize proper syntex when using emotion tags, i can personally say that my opera browser on my 8088 could not make heads or tails of your post.

:)

Yeah.

I thought your post about yelling unlimiband to Cogent amusing. I thought maybe you were saying to use it as leverage to get IPs. My post was saying if it doesn't work on the host blacklisted (none of they seem to care they are on the list), then how will Cogent respond?

<start sarcasm>

Yup this is what makes no sense to me. I have heard this same story many of times. A place I was looking at moving some servers to told me its a pain in the a** to get a class C from them, and I need a few.....and they to have a gige pipe from cogent. Arin shows they have 62.28.* which isnt that many Ips for what they offer. Maybe thats why they want psinet for their ips :) hahaha

Naw, they're just greedy/conservative, you pick, they've got more ip's then that... :

66.208.0.0/19
