Hello designers, which measurements do you recommend / use when designing for 800x600 resolution compatibility?

Would you use 780px width? or leave some white space e.g. 770 or less? What is better for most users?

Thank you.

If you are talking about a template which I assume you are then:

780 px width will do. :)

well the scroll bar on your browser is just about 20 pixels width (20px + 780px = 800px)

So I would recommend 780.

So I mean, is it 20px for all users?

I always design at 770 :)

wdi, people can customize it to their liking. I usually do between 760 and 780.

So you say that the template style is the main controller of page width as some templates require full width and some not. I asked the question because I thought there's also a technical part involved beside that.

How do you accommodate users who have sidebars open or who don't browse with maximized windows, two very common browser configurations?

We always use 791 for our designs..

791 will give you horizontal scrolling at 800x600.

I design only as a hobby. I try and keep my sites viewable for users with 800x600 although, I don't know many people using that resolution these days. My own desktop resolution is 1600x1200.

I'm guessing he's referring to an image-heavy layout, so you have to make sacrifices.. [believe me, I'd love to know a way to make an image-heavy layout fluid, but I haven't found how so far]

The point is that if you're designing sites at 760px because you think this is good for people who use 800x600 monitors, you're not taking into account the fact that there's more to one's browsing habits than the resolution of the monitor.

I use a setup similar to the PayPal dashboard screen. Makes use of the space, but looks fine (not horizontal scrolling etc) at 800x600.

Just watch out for mile long lines of text - that isn't any good regardless of the resolution.

That's getting a pain now. What is from your point view the most desired or most accepted measurements for most users/browsers?

Pay me $50,000 and I'll put together a comprehensive study to find out people's browsing habits and their personal preferences :) - you'll probably find there's no single trend for what people desire and what works best, and you'll end up more lost than when you first asked the question.

Until then, I'll just use 100% as much as possible (not always possible, but always worth considering), and I'll let each individual decide how he or she wants to view the site.

Unless there is a definite need for a fixed width, I design the site to scale with the browser window. Especially those with large, high-res screens seldom browse full screen and the size they set their browser window to can vary considerably. The use of various toolbars and sidebars can also influecne it as previously noted.
