View Full Version : Would you host someone who wants to give out free e-mail access?
Skeptical 03-13-2002, 07:43 PM Would you host someone who wanted to use bigmailbox (outsourced e-mail) to give out free web e-mail access? I'm a bit skeptical myself because of the potential spam complaints I might get in the future. What are your thoughts and experiences with this? Am I being paranoid?
phpjames 03-13-2002, 08:05 PM I wouldnt care so much because its not as though mail is handled through your server. If there is a problem with spam you can easly cancel an email or account through bigmailbox or everyone.net.
You don't host the service, so why would you have to worry about spam? This would be BigMailBox's problem.
Skeptical 03-15-2002, 01:42 PM That's what I'm thinking too, but then when spamcop generates complaints they land on the domain name owner's ISP. That's what I'm worried about. That my upline may harass me about it.
Well I would be skeptical as well. Even though it is not going to waste bandwith on your own server, people may complain and you may get charged. I would not take a chance. But it's not my decision. Just be skeptical.
tazd9t9 03-15-2002, 07:10 PM I would also be skeptical about this, you dont want to risk getting in trouble yourself and lets face it a hell of a lot of email addresses are used for smap especially when u mention the magic word *free*
SI-Chris 03-15-2002, 07:28 PM I have a few clients that use Everyone.net, and it's never been a problem. I use SpamCop quite a bit and I don't remember ever seeing an everyone.net reporting address. In fact I just looked up everyone.net and SpamCop is not even blocking their e-mail (so maybe everyone.net has spam-prevention filters in place?). Same thing for bigmailbox.com. The only potential problem I see is if the spammer uses the client's everyone.net account as a reply-to e-mail in the body of their spam, and I don't see that as a huge deal for the domain's hosting service; the huge deal is if spam actually gets sent through your server.
Neo3Net 03-16-2002, 06:54 PM I wouldn't worry about it. Everyone.net has spam protection so they can't put the finger on you. I am not sure about BigMailBox however.

Haha fits my screen name just fine. :stickout
akashik 03-19-2002, 02:55 AM We have domains using free e-mail through everyone.net and bigmailbox (well not so much everyone.net since they charge now), and have never had an issue with them at all.
re: spamcop... I agree. I've never seen a free e-mail service like these two show up in their reports.

rinnando 03-19-2002, 03:14 AM I too offer free e mail through easynet for 2 years now. As a promotionel set for our site. I now have a reseller account with Spash host. ( Will start reseling in a few months , got to get it perfect first ! Been reading and visiting this board for a long time now. )
It was one thing I did need to keep since we have 12000 users. No way I was going to use up any of my bandwith on these accounts.
We, or our previous host has never had any problems with them.
Alot of web sites give free e mail as a promotionel extra. Limiting them would not be a good idea I think.
Just wanted to give the opinion of one of easynets users.

Are easynet any good for free e-mail services? Just curious..

rinnando 03-19-2002, 04:32 AM As I said I have been using them for a long while now. They did once have a lot of pop ups but due to many complaints they have only one now I think. The price you pay for free!
The free accounts are only 5 megs but other then that I have never had any problems with them.
As a provider of free mail you can co-brand with your site and add promo sign. to all out going mail. Helps promote your site!
No down time, no loss of mail( that I know)
Of the 12000 users I would think most are used for trash mail. But the ones that use it often, I can't just can't permit the bandwith . This way I offer something that doesn't effect my bandwith usage and still get my promo out.
