View Full Version : .avi file(s) not working!?
PencWeb 03-13-2002, 05:55 PM Hey everyone,
I downloaded 4 .avi (movies) files from KaZaA, and only one out of the 4 work properly. :stickout
What happens when I open one of the 3, it plays the audio just fine, but no video. :stickout Anyone know why??! And/or how to solve this? I downloaded the new Windows Media player, so that's what I'm using. And I tried them on Quicktime.
Thanks!

You know I had the same issue.. I downloaded 2 movies which I think came close to 3 gigs went to play them and all I heard was friggin sound.. Someone told my try the DIVX player and that did not work so I just killed them.. Best thing to do is when your downloading after about a meg or so has come down right click on the transfer and hit play and it should show a small clip of the start of the movie.. This is what I have been doing since then and had no probs..

Ahh cool, I'll get the latest version tonight! :) So all the movies work now eh? That's great! Now I don't have to redownload the movies, and in a different format. ;)

Yeah, these movies take up so much space, too bad. :( Yeah for real, when I opened some of them, it was just fricken sound, and I was so ticked. Cuz I spent NIGHTS getting these huge files, and now they don't work!?
But I will take both of your advice, thanks so much dudes!!! :D
Thanks again, ;)

I thought getting the latest divx codec usually fixes the problem (rather than downloading a new version of a player). At least that's what I did in my case.
XTStrike 03-14-2002, 07:27 AM www.divx.com
and get the latest "playa" and when you start playing them ovie if you dont get sound of video or both then right click the screen and goto "properties" it will tell you what codecs it is using to play the file, head for divx.com and get the right codec, install it and it should play.
I had a file once and it took me 2 hours to find the right codec, i installed every single one i could find, ironically after that I had installed over 400 codecs I never had a problem playing any files ever again.
also dont forget that if an AVI is not complete you cannot play the file, unlike mpg where you can play the file as long as you have the first part (some even play without that!!)
Good Luck
PencWeb 03-14-2002, 10:58 AM Lain, yeah I think you're right. I downloaded the latest version of Quicktime, and it's still the same problem. :( I downloaded a few DivX players, and none of them worked how I wanted them to! And so when I was about to give up, I downloaded RadLight, which is a I do have to say.. really cool DivX player. ;)
And well, the only movie that doesn't work now, is The Matrix, and I don't know why, but this is the only .avi file that I have which is like 40mb is size. I dunno why it's so small, it says on the description "full movie", and it said the length of it, which is the full thing, but I dunno why it doesn't work. This is the only one that doesn't work now. ;) Anyone know why this particular .avi file is so small in size, but is the full length?
Thanks xtstrike, I'm gonna get that DivX player and see if the matrix will work on there. ;)
Thanks again,
- Shawn
binaris 03-14-2002, 11:56 AM DivX 5 Pro is now ad-supported if you don't want to pay for it... so be careful which version you install, you might end up with the GAIN/Gator software lurking around your system. I'd recommend jumping over to www.filemirrors.com and searching for DivX5Bundle.exe...
;)
PencWeb 03-14-2002, 06:13 PM Thanks man. ;) Yeah I found that there are ads in the new version. :( Are they really annoying? :( Well, I installed it last night, and when I open it, it says that it can't because something that it can't find/open the skins needed, and I don't know how the heck to fix this. :stickout I checked to see if the Default is there, and yeah it is, and I downloaded another one, but I can't get it to work. :( And this is the only program I know of that opens small avi files, but that are long in length. ;)
Thanks,
- Shawn
