View Full Version : Motherboard for 1U case?
JamieT 03-13-2002, 04:04 PM Anyone recommend a MB that has dual nics, capable of 1 Gig RAM, and Single proc?
Asus had a nice board but it has the Intel 815 chipset.. that can only handle 512 RAM..
Any recommendations would be great.
emoore 03-13-2002, 04:31 PM If you don't have a budget, the Intel Server board (I think it is the SCB2) is a nice board with 2 or 4 gigs of ram support, dual processor, and a lot of other features. I am just quoting these from the top of my head, but the specs should be close.
It will probably cost you 300-400 though.
JamieT 03-13-2002, 06:46 PM Whats the best deal on a motherboard that can do more than 512 RAM and has LAN built in and doesn't have a SCSI controller.
I myself have been very happy with Tyan motherboard. I have 3 of them (2) 2505 and (1) 2510 I love them all. Two of them never been turned-off once they're put in production. The only reason I need to turn-off/cold reboot the other one is due to 3WARE RAID firmware upgrade. I would recommend them highly.
For the best deal, you can check http://www.pricewatch.com. I got mine from http://www.micropro.com.
cbaker17 03-14-2002, 03:26 PM I would throw those tyan boards into the street and watch them be run over several times then throw them in a incinerator :) no truthfully tyan makes good stuff, but their server boards at least the 20 we ordered SUCKED, anytime you applied the rentention arm on a cpu heatsink to the arms on the sides of the sockets the arms broke off, which means you couldnt mount a heat sink to the socket which means you cant run a cpu which means that you cant use the board. To make matters worse this wasnt isolated to just our batch i found out its a common problem with these boards, so i was like fine ill just send them in for repair.... HAHAHAHA
Tyan writes back that this doesnt fall under warranty and their not capable of being repaired, so needless to say ive got about 5k worth of brand new tyan motherboard which i cant use...
NICE
On a side note im very happy with asus.
I'm sorry to hear that Charles. :( Your technician must be quite powerful :D

JamieT 03-14-2002, 03:49 PM What asus boards are you using?
Fiber 03-14-2002, 04:24 PM Tyan does make good motherboards though. There Tyan 815ef Tomcat S2425 has dual onboard NIC's but only supports 512MB of RAM.
Look to spend some $$$$.
porcupine 03-14-2002, 04:51 PM Charles:
- Super glue
- Elastics
- Twist Ties
- Zip Ties
- Portions of fat from Rita Mcneil's stomach/thighs
- Clips
Surely there must be something you can do to those boards to make them not all go to waste :D.
cbaker17 03-14-2002, 05:19 PM I would love to, but would you want us to jerry rig up something if it was your server?? Dont think that would sit to well with customers :(
porcupine 03-14-2002, 05:26 PM If it was professionally done honestly i'd be indifferent. I'm not sure what those motherboards are like, but if the arms snapped off, did they leave mounting holes? Sometimes if theres mounting holes you can get a new heatsync to mount on. Regardless, if you've got 2 mounting holes, thermal grease, a zip tie, and the heatsync will make an excellent solution to hold it together, and will often hold the heatsync tighter (allowing for more dissipation) then the normal holding arms. I'd have no objections to a setup like this as long as it was done professionally, might wanta look into that, or find someone on ebay to buy off the boards :)
Alan - Vox 03-14-2002, 05:26 PM You could just send them to me :)
... at least the 20 we ordered SUCKED, anytime you applied the rentention arm on a cpu heatsink to the arms on the sides of the sockets the arms broke off ...
Well, there are 20 of them. I'd like to know myself how the side arm broke on all of them. I'm sure company like Tyan should've tested the arm thousand times. :)
porcupine 03-14-2002, 10:42 PM this probably doesen't apply, but sometimes cards stored in a very arid environment become extremely brittle. I've had numerous motherboards crack when applying retention mechanisms to hold the heatsync/cpu down. If it was a batch inappropriatly stored, exposed to heat, etc. its a definite possibility that almost all would crack/break.
lightone 03-18-2002, 02:43 AM Personally, we use a Biostar mb with built in Video/LAN and a 900mhz athlon with a $20.00 GT Copper heatsink.
If you run over 950mhz AMD you cant fit that huge heatsink so with the copper you have to stay under 1gigz.
The board is generally cheap and has shown to be pretty reliable. Mostly we use abit, but abit doesn't have built in video usally.
Also, don't run those heatsinks unless your 1U case has a good blower!! Don't want to fry that CPU.
Info on products listed:
Biostar m7vkQ Motherboard
GT 1U heatsink + fan
~900Mhz AMD Athlon
Neo3Net 03-21-2002, 11:20 PM www.streetprices.com has some good prices on things.
I think that you can use any MB as long as it fits into the casing. (ex. 19 Inch RackMount Case .......Less then 19 Inch MB)
