View Full Version : Quality affordable co-lo $25
drewnick 03-13-2002, 02:06 PM I think back to when I would have given the world to have my site be one of the fastest on the 'Net. Now I take it for granted.
You, too, can have your site hosted on the world's largest backbone.
1 Unit of Space -- perfect for Cobalt R2/3/4 or Dell's
5GB of bandwidth
$25/mo! $25/mo! $25/mo! $25/mo! $25/mo!
Add'l bandwidth: $2/GB
Reboot of server: toll-free 24x7 phone.
** PLEASE Test the speed (and tell me how it looks):***

Synergy 03-13-2002, 02:09 PM How much per MBPS?
drewnick 03-13-2002, 02:12 PM You mean 1 Mbps connection, guaranteed?
allending 03-13-2002, 03:44 PM Speed is fast for me Drew (as much as my DSL can handle).
We had a box co-located with Drew/ValueTech/Cobalthost for quite a while. There was A LOT of downtime when we first got there, and then when we tried to leave, we ended up having to threaten to get attorneys involved to recover our box. In addition, Drew/ValueTech/Cobalthost owes us about $6000.00 in co-location fees for the rack at the DV2 datacenter in Atlanta that he contracted with us for. I definately would not risk sending them any equipment if I were you.
porcupine 03-14-2002, 04:02 AM This is in no way a flame, but i don't understand how people are offering this stuff, drewnick, is this special coming out of your pocket? Because i know that electricity and HVAC for most servers is at least $25/mo alone, not even including the other overheads. Regardless, with the exception of the transfer, i dont think you'll find too many people matching this. :)
panopticon 03-14-2002, 04:41 AM but i don't understand how people are offering this stuff
Seems to make sense to me. Since it's colocation he doesn't have much expense up front. As you said, the $25 covers electricity and hvac, and probably the bandwdith included - he's only including 5 GB of bandwidth you'll notice. I'm sure he's banking on the fact that people will keep their servers there and their sites will take well over 5 GB very soon and then he starts making profit on the bandwdith over 5 GB. I would think that almost everyone who goes with their own server (rather than a virtual account) will be using more than 5 GB in no time. Actually seems like a fairly sensible offer, and also a nice way to get started.
porcupine 03-14-2002, 04:45 AM Heh, i figured people would move dns servers over there and little else :)
drewnick 03-14-2002, 03:31 PM Believe me, at the $25 level it's making money. Esp. on "sunk costs" I.E. I have a good portion of a cabinet with free space. Filling it is a good proposition.

cbaker17 03-14-2002, 03:33 PM Can I colocate a telephone there? How many U's would this be? Whats your SLA in regards to answering this said phone should it ring?
drewnick 03-14-2002, 03:40 PM Sure -- the provisioning of a phone line is just $50/mo but requires a 6 month contract since Inflow has to pull up the floor(raised) lay the line, and put it back.
As for answering... see me off the board. ;-)
It's funny you ask that. I keep a Sprint PCS in each cabinet or pair of cabinets, as it is $10/mo and gives whoever may be working there an easy working line with no battery limits.

Ahh, i knew it was too good to be true. He wants extra $$$ if he hasta talk dirty over the phone hehehe :D
drewnick 03-14-2002, 03:49 PM And web servers that make e-commerce. If you think about how many sales you can do PER GIGABYTE, paying even $10/GB is fine. For information dissimination, game servers, email, chat, etc. (all of which we have clients doing in addition to online commerce) bandwidth is a bit more sensitive.
Our sites fly compared to others. Especially to anyone on BellSouth FastAccess, since we are 2ms of of ATL UUNET, and they are generally no more than 10ms off of ATL UUNET. Now, for the other 99% of you... :-)

TradeViceroy 03-15-2002, 02:22 AM Ummm...the comment by Baker....was he making a joke or was he trying to sounde derogatory towards this thread? I'm just looking for clarification.
Is this topic even real for that matter? I can't even tell with all the "off-topic" remarks.
I'm interested in this if it real.
Thanks.
Maniac 03-15-2002, 02:25 AM What backbone(s)? do you have? Who are they through?
porcupine 03-15-2002, 02:25 AM He was making a Joke. If we could get colocated tech support for $25/mo, i'd have 2 dozen reps hehe.
TradeViceroy 03-15-2002, 02:28 AM So Baker was making a joke....but this thread is real...right?
Maniac 03-15-2002, 02:30 AM Now I'm confused. I didn't read all the posts. Is this just a joke?

Hehehe...we'll be confused together! :)
drewnick 03-15-2002, 09:31 AM Bandwidth by UUNET and AT&T. Trace/ping atl.valuetech.com if you so wish.
The thread, in my opinion, is not a joke. The publicity is fine, as I'm getting inquiries for this extra space!

cbaker17 03-15-2002, 12:31 PM How could it not be clear i was joking? I asked if you could colocate a phone there, and what the SLA was for it.... jeez
And it was nothing against drewnick, i dont even know the fellow, his offer seems great, if you look at all my posts i try to lend a little humor in them to cheer everyone up.
As hosts its easy to get brunt out.... humor is what keeps us going sometimes.

Well, after you posted the threat went off-topic. I just wasn't sure about any of the posts.
Anyhow....my question has been answered. Thanks.
Maniac 03-15-2002, 04:01 PM Hi,
Your Network doesn't ping very fast...sorry..
drewnick 03-16-2002, 02:18 AM Details, please?
Drew
Maniac 03-16-2002, 02:37 AM From me?
drewnick 03-16-2002, 09:11 PM Yes, a traceroute would be appreciated.
Thanks!
P.S. -- Anyone else interested in this offer? I still have quite a bit of room for your servers.
Drew
Maniac 03-17-2002, 12:15 AM Where is the datacenter located?
drewnick 03-17-2002, 03:19 AM Atlanta, USA

From my server at VDI: 514.76KB/s
cheers,

drewnick 03-19-2002, 02:12 PM That's great to hear. Would you like to put a server here?
Drew
TradeViceroy 03-19-2002, 05:46 PM I want to put a server there. From what I've read, it looks to be a great deal. =)
Please PM or e-mail me with the details. Thanks. :P
dektong 03-19-2002, 06:32 PM what can you lose with $25/month :)
cheers,
drewnick 03-25-2002, 10:11 AM You can lose your server if you go with a bad carrier. I would be careful about where I sent my Dell $3,000 server. :-)
We carry property insurance on all equipment and have the latest/greatest when it comes to technology for fire supression, etc.
Drew
Maniac 03-25-2002, 10:14 AM You can lose your nice server as drewnick was saying
drewnick 03-25-2002, 10:24 AM It sounds like you speak from experience!
Maniac 03-25-2002, 10:27 AM Nope, I've never gotten that lucky yet :)
