View Full Version : Clientexec -> Modernbill
adamneal 04-24-2005, 03:40 PM Hi,
I'm going to be starting out soon with a reseller account. This account comes with a free installation of Clientexec. Being the kinda optimistic person that I am I would like to think that within a few months I'll be in a position where I could move to a dedicated server. When this happens I think I will probably use Modernbill.
The question is how difficult is the move from clientexec to modernbill? Is it an easy transition or would I be better off getting modernbill from the start?
Thanks
Adam
bithost(NET) 04-24-2005, 07:13 PM Adam,
I'd get MB from the start. I started out with ClientExec and had to manually migrate all of my customers and each individual domain record, by hand. At the time we had about 40 clients and 80 domain records to transfer. It took me several days full-time to do it. Basically you have to put the two windows next to each other and copy/paste every data field... or type it all in.
I am not aware of a migration script that works consistently, so the safest way to migrate the data will be by hand. I don't want to make it sound like it's impossible because it certainly isn't, but I had a lot of other things I could have been doing the better part of that week... it was a dreary task so I admit it stretched out a bit longer than it should've, I managed to procrastinate it out and grumble about it for a couple 2, 3 weeks. :P LOL
:D Bailey
IMeanWebHosting 04-24-2005, 10:11 PM I believe modernbill will migrate them for you for a small fee...?
adamneal 04-25-2005, 12:12 PM Hey,
Thanks for the replies. I've been playing around with the modernbill demo some more and the more I use it the more I like it so I reckon I'll go ahead with that. WIll save some hassle further along even if I do pay someone to import the details for me....
Thanks
VanHost 04-25-2005, 04:10 PM If you think of it like this:
4 months @ $24.95 = $99.80 for ModernBill Leased License
Now give yourself an hourly rate of what your time is worth, we'll say $10.00/hr to prove a point (very low rate)
3 days @ 8hrs per day to migrate your accounts in 4 months
24hrs @ $10.00 = $240.00
You save $140.00 if you get ModernBill now. Heck, with that savings, you can buy the script instead of leasing it :)
WireNine 04-26-2005, 02:09 AM I've seen on some website that they switch over from other billing scripts to MB within a matter of minutes. But it would be wise to start with MB if you're planning to switch over anyways. :)

No host can switch billing systems in a matter of minutes. It takes the average host many days to plan and implement the switch, from 1 billing platform to another.

Yep, save yourself the hassle down the track. :)
adamneal 04-26-2005, 04:19 AM Hi,
Well it's decided then, modernbill it is. On another note is it worthwhile buying the program over leasing it? If you pay the support fees do you still get the upgrade to new versions etc..
I'll go and check this out on their website later but if anyone knows the answer let me know :)
Rman2003 04-26-2005, 04:33 AM Updates are available for 6 months with owned licenses. After that, you'll need to renew your "support" contract for another 6 months, which I believe is currently around 30 USD.
adamneal 04-26-2005, 04:42 AM Thanks for that ryan, I've been looking at your order form the last couple of days as well. Looks very promising
Rman2003 04-26-2005, 04:47 AM Not a problem at all. And I'm definately glad you've been looking at it. If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact me directly.
Rman2003 04-26-2005, 05:02 AM I've also been looking at something to address the problem of CE -> MB conversions, as this seems to be a problem that comes up quite frequently. Although, unfortunately, I don't have enough hours in the day for all of my side projects, some have to take a back seat to the work that pays the bills. :)
fastnoc 04-26-2005, 08:00 AM yeah. no kidding! It could be worse. Like you'd have dopey clients keeping you awake till 4 am on a regular basis
okihost 04-26-2005, 11:49 AM Many scripts will tell you they move over the data from one script to another but they usually do not include what does not get copied over :) little things like past invoices and transactions, usernames and other things which will leave you still going back manually to copy certain things over from all accounts.
