View Full Version : Best TLD For California Christian Private School

I am working with a local Christian private Jr/High school to help them with their web presence. They currently have a rather 'bulky' .org domain name. I think that .org is the most appropriate TLD for them to use, but they want to explore other options.

Any opinions on what TLD a California Christian Private Jr/High school should use?

Would the school be eligible for a .edu domain? Not being in the USA I am not familiar with the rules. The .edu registry can be found at:

http://www.educause.edu/content.asp?PAGE_ID=720&bhcp=1

If you don't qualify for .edu I think .org is fine - if the existing domain is too bulky you could perhaps try to find something shorter?

I am pretty sure they don't qualify for .edu since they are not a "post secondary" school which to me means college/university. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Oh and I should mention that I definatly plan to find a 'less bulky' name, but before I put on the thinking cap I wanted to determing the best TLD to use...hence this thread! :D

Well then...how do you explain the domain name in your signature? LOL

That is actually my rule for the most part. I have one .net myself, and stick to .com the rest of the time. I am just double checking that there isn't some newer TLD for schools I wasn't aware of. Doesn't look like there is.

Thanks!

My opinion is to get both a .org and .com extension for the same name.

It is my experience, be that what it may, that most folks think of Church or Church-affiliated websites as being .org addresses though there is no hard and fast rule. Domains being as cheap as they are I would find a name that you could give both TLD extensions to and just park the secondary name at the primary one.

A .org would be best in my opinion.

LOL! You caught me red handed. That is one of the few .net domains that I have (and for some special reason which I am not supposed to mention here). I don't even register the .net version for my more important .com's. The line of thinking is that: if you don't have .com, using a .net only sends traffic to the .com guy; if you already have the .com, you don't need the .net.

.org would be best. But why don't you just register every
TLD which is still available? :)

I agree with the 2 posts above, especially the second if it can be
helped (well, maybe .biz isn't necessary :) )

But as you know, .com has the strongest pull. Think factcheck.com. :D
