Isn't modernbill a management service that is supposed to interface with a merchant account, not a merchant account in itself?

Yep good pont just read thu it:) Does anyone here use it?

Does it offer automatic billing or do I have to invoice every month to every client?

Do you think clients prefer 2check or modernbill?

We use 2checkout and are happy with it so far, our clients haven't complained about it or praised it yet, so i don't think they care to much.

I think clients like to be billed clearly, accurately, and regularly. How you manage to do that doesn't really matter to them.

As pointed out earlier, you use modernbill with your own merchant account -- meaning you're billing in your own name -- as opposed to 2checkout, where you're using their merchant account. So perhaps what you're asking is whether customers prefer that you have a merchant account or use a third-party processor. There's some speculation that potential clients will feel more comfortable with the "professionalism" of the first, but it's hard to quantify that. Personally, I think it's a very small percentage of customers who either notice or care.
