View Full Version : you guys seen those new flash ads that take up the whole screen?
genevaroth 03-12-2002, 12:23 AM I was at salon.com and when I clicked onto the next page the page darkened to a gray, you could still see the artical underneath and then a ad for ET came up. I right clicked the image and it was flash. I could'nt click on anything underneath until the ad was done.
ooh this is going to become so annoying
my question is how do you do this?
if you have never seen these ads you probably think I was drunk.
no no - I've seen them, they're annoying as hell !! my questino is how to block them?

GeorgeC 03-12-2002, 06:06 AM Last ad I can recall that resembles your description is on the frontpage of Yahoo.com, an ad for Pepsi with Brittney Spears. Quite cool actually.
UGH... in addition to the ET one I had Britney Spears pop out of a pepsi can on Yahoo.com and do a little dance for me.
I was on the phone with a client trying to grab a link in a hurry when this visual and sound came from the computer...
 Nope...don't like them one bit.
Very kewl coding for sure but I see no valuable use for it whatsoever :disagree:
XTStrike 03-12-2002, 06:29 AM ive not seen an Ad in years.
Every since I installed www.adsubtract.com and registered for the Professional version ive never ever seen a single advertisement online.
Ive sent e-mails praising them on several occasions, its the best software ever released!!
Well Done AdSubtract
-- BTW its not often I will praise a piece of software, infact I think this is the first time I have done so, but I just love the software so much!
mahinder 03-12-2002, 08:35 AM nope i can not see any ad blocking hole page, it only comes on top of page that's it. what are you talking about ?
snikle 03-12-2002, 01:27 PM It is "going to become so annoying" and yet he/she asks "my question is how do you do this? "
Not so annoying if you can do it, eh? :D
And yes I have fallen victim to these as well, think one was on yahoo.com, cant remember, just know I was stunned when my entire screen was taken over, at least it only lasted for a few seconds!
Jason Ellis 03-12-2002, 01:37 PM Oh, I *hate* these! The Boston Globe has been doing these types of things on boston.com for over a year. The first one I can recall seeing was an ad for FedEx - they had this stupid little FedEx truck "driving" all over the screen while I'm sitting here trying to read the headlines around the damned thing.
I hate those ads. I really do. Frankly, any ad that makes sound come out of my speakers *really* pisses me off. There is no excuse for it. I don't want *any* web site to make sound come out of my speakers, but when it's an ad it's even worse.
I don't mind ads. Ads are a necessary evil - without them, most web sites couldn't survive. But these intrusive ads that do nothing but interfere with your surfing just have to go. Frankly, I'm *less* inclined to buy from these companies because of these ads - the companies are actually damaging their business by using them.

mindboggle 03-12-2002, 05:56 PM I hate it when I'm trying to look up the weather on weather.com and all of a sudden a HUGE (takes up the ENTIRE page) ad comes strolling across the screen and you know it's going to cover whatever you're looking at but there's nothing you can do to stop it.
CChard 03-12-2002, 06:12 PM Whats funny is they think the ads will want to make you buy stuff from them.
I have a list of every ad that annoys me. From the flash ones to the ones connected to my sunday comics (not just raped around, like a flap connected to them).

Thanks you for recommending this ads removal program. I will try it out soon.
genevaroth 03-13-2002, 03:33 PM The net is changing, its not the information superhighway any more. Its more commercial and will ads will continue get more invasive. But who here is employed or works for themselves? Every business big or small has had to, sell a product or service. Yes, to get money I had to knock on doors and sell my services to people who did'nt invite me and sometimes did'nt relize that they needed my service. Sometimes they did'nt want me there. I am like human spam. I look at ads and advertising this way- I love when people come to me to buy. They don't have to be "sold" or convinced and I can just focus on giving them what they want.
thats all.
akashik 03-13-2002, 03:48 PM I saw one of those recently (I just don't browse like I used to). Foget what it was for, but I had to site for a few seconds while this thing came and went. My initial reaction was from a design point of view and I liked it. A split second later I was annoyed that I was blocked from content while I had to watch it. Shortly after that it went away and I could go into the site - I'd forgotten totally what the ad was for.
What happens to me is, when I see something I don't like ad wise a little switch goes off and it gets removed from my head. If I'm annoyed by an ad they never get me as a sales as I never remember them. On a few occasions I've become angry with ads and I do remember those. They'll never get a sale even if they have a product I may like (I'll just use their competiton).
Now if they'd used a small ad, well designed that offered something I wanted, I wouldn't hesitate clicking the banner to check it out.
In all, I think ad companies have just crossed the line now and are trying way too hard

IceBlaZe 03-13-2002, 04:44 PM Actually I quite like them... they are cool designed and i can close them with a click of the mouse.
Besides, they are the only things that keep some of our net sources for free, for now.
