Check this out:

I saw quite a few ads in my email about registering .USA domains. Almost registered our domain name with this extension, just to have them all I guess. Cant believe they got away with it this long, as I saw the ads a few months ago

I'm sorry, how is this *any* different than what new.net is doing?

No different al all. Except these guys have a couple heavy hitters backing them known as "Distribution Partners".

Isn't it the case that new.net names (and those of a few of the other "unsanctioned" TLDs) do work -- as long as the potential visitor installs their plugin, or is using an ISP that has tied into the unsanctioned nameservers?

It sounds, from the three or four articles I've read on .usa, that they didn't have any operating nameservers at all. The names never worked.

Then there's the marketing approach: new.net and others make at least a nominal explanation of the hoops users will have to jump through to be able to visit your site if you register through them (though they do tend to gloss over the potential email snafus) but it sounds as if the .usa gang didn't do that.

I think JayC really hit it on the head.

New.Net is proposing an alternate root system.

I believe that .usa was purely a rip-off.

New.net domain names are funny.
What they do is add a plugin to your web browser that redirects any and all extensions outside of the known .com .net .org .biz .info and foreign extensions to their web site. This means that the only people who can view new.net domain names are people with this plugin. Search engines can't see them, anyone without the plugin can't see them. This means that you are paying hard earned money for domain names that 98% of the web population cannot see.
It's a cool idea, but until their domains become a little more main stream, I'll hold off.

I'm not one to shun new technology but...

It's absolutely rediculous to use such a non-standard method with expectation that friends, customers, and other users will some-day install this wonderful plugin just to gain access.
