It varies with the registry on how long they place it on hold after expiration but 30 days is probably a good guess even though some registrars place them on hold for 60-90 days. I wouldn't take any chances.

what abt transfer.Do registrar charge for transfering domain to other registrar and getting transfered the domain to the existing registrar

Ideally you'll be charged by the gaining registrar (the one you're
transferring to). The losing one shouldn't charge you anything at
all except to renew the domain if it expired already.

to be sure jus ask your domain provider ask them by email and they should tell you the right date

Just as a point of reference GoDaddy charges about $7.95 for a transfer, icannwholesale charges about the same price I think. The nice thing about a domain transfer is that the domain is moved over to the new registrar and they add a year onto your existing expiration date. If you domain is set to expire May 1, 2005 and you transferred the domain today it would expire May 1, 2006.

there is no guarantee to keep your domain AFTEr expiration date, better to renew it before expiration.

usually its possible to transfer away before expiration date if the domain is NOT locked
