Is it possible to partition a drive with Win XP (pro) so I can install Red Hat (v7.1) on the new partition?
I'm having second thoughts to try it because it could mess things up. Has anyone tried this?
Just in case, i plan to use Partition Magic for Win XP.

I have it,
Say you have a 20GB drive, do this:
Create one primary of say 15GB.
Leave the remaining 5GB NOT ALLOCATED.
Use disk druid (or whatever) inside the linux installation to make linux partitions.
RH 7.1 will create an auto boot menu with GRUB.
works like a charm...
DONT put linux and windows on the same PHYSICAL drive.. i learned that the hard way, plus just dont do it

I have been putting linux and windows on the same drive for ages.... and it always worked well.
Infact, right now on my 30GB drive I have slackware 8, windows xp pro and win2k pro installed.
And many others do the same with no problems.. I dont see why a failure of yours should be a sharp warn to others, isolized.

It is easier to put it on a seperate drive, but unless you have a spare drive allready installed ive had no problems getting windows and various linux distros to live together.

I had no problem installing Redhat 7.2 and Windows XP. It's all on a single 60 GB hard drive.
Step 1)
Re-partitioned my hard drive with XP on it using Partition Magic 7.0 (Lost no data!)
Step 2)
Create new Linux partition
Step 3)
Restart computer with Redhat CD inside and installed it in the new partition. Do not install the boot loader in the MBR but at the beginning of the partition.
Step 4) Using Boot Magic create a boot manager and point one setup to windows XP and another to your linux partition and your done.

You make it too hard.
Simply resize your windows partition to about half or less/more of the hard drive.
Stick in the linux cd's..restart, and then just select "Install on existing space" and it will not remove any partitions, it will make new ones itself in the extra space on your hard drive.
It will take care of the bootloader and everything for you automatically.
