I'm sure this has been brought up a million times on this forum.....but I'm new, so please help!

Basically I'm managing a Raq 4 for a client, I've setup the host domain no problem, and the email works fine. My problems lies with virtual domains added to the server. The sites work fine but when I config. the mx-records for each domain I can't get the mail to work.

These are the settings I'm using:

MX:

virtualdomain.com > mail.virtualdomain.com
www.virtualdomain.com > mail.virtualdomain.com

Site settings:

Host Name: www
Domain Name: virtualdomain.com
web server alias: virtualdomain.com
Email server alias: virtualdomain.com

In outlook express I have the setting:

pop3 server: virtualdomain.com

I can send emails with the addresses specified no problem, and I can receive emails sent to the address from my hotmail.com account?!?

but when I send mail from my personal account (chris@halfcab.net) I get the following error:

The original message was received at Mon, 11 Mar 2002 08:40:47 GMT
from adsl-212-42-174-237.fast.net.uk [212.42.174.237] (may be forged)

<email@virtualdomain.com>

Please help me, I just can't seem to get all this working!

Host Name: www
Domain Name: virtualdomain.com
web server alias: virtualdomain.com
Email server alias: virtualdomain.com, mail.virtualdomain.com

I'm using virtualdomain.com as the setting in 'incoming mail (pop 3) in outlook express, is this correct?

Also is there anything I need to add in the 'email server parameters' in the raq 4 control panel?

....any help out there would be much appreciated! :spiny:

Quick Example Config:

A record:
www domain.com 111.111.111.11
(create PTR reverse)

A record:
domain.com 111.111.111.11

MX Record:
domain.com
domain.com


Set inbound and outbound to domain.com then make sure you have 'accept email for domain' checked in the site settings.

This change would allow you to receive email addressed as:
user@virtualdomain.com or user@mail.virtualdomain.com
-which I'm guessing isn't the desired result...

You *could* switch this info to:
web server alias: virtualdomain.com, mail.virtualdomain.com
Email server alias: virtualdomain.com
-but honestly, I'd just MX to domain.com (not mail.domain.com) and save yourself from possible errors like this in the future. If you do this, you'll be fine.

Still getting the same error. I'll just confirm what I've done, I'm sure this is correct.

Mx:

www.virtualdomain.com > vitualdomain.com
virtualdomain.com > virtualdomain.com

Site Settings:

host name: www
domain name: virtualdomain.com
web server alias: virtualdomain.com
email server alias: virtualdomain.com

Outlook:

incoming mail (pop3): virtualdomain.com

Do I need to set anything in the email parameters in 'control panel' (like the 'Relay for the following Hosts/Domains' setting?)

I can't get email working for any site this server is hosting except the main server domain, help me!

Can you post your whole DNS zone file, not just MX? You could probably get rid of:

www.virtualdomain.com > vitualdomain.com

-but I wouldn't think that would affect things either way (still not needed). If you've just made these changes, wait 24-48 hours. Site settings look fine. You don't need to muck around with relay settings.
