Another post mentioned them but it went off-topic and never got much about if they were legit or not? Synergy 03-11-2002, 12:02 AM umm never heard of them...... whats their URL? equiller 03-11-2002, 12:19 AM their url is z555.com. the plan i am looking at is the Standard Plan. any comments would be appreciated, thanks! roly 03-11-2002, 12:22 AM Powered by Cobalt RaQ richy 03-11-2002, 12:58 AM their site is hosted at rackshack. and rackshack do cobalts or at least did so thats maybe where the shared hosting is. as for the ded servers anyones guess. equiller 03-11-2002, 09:36 AM I'm new to this so are Cobalts a bad thing? I get two posts mentioning them but not explaining what it means... richy 03-11-2002, 05:47 PM cobalt raqs aint bad. theyre very 'proprietary' :) www.cobalt.com the famous blue pizza boxes. theyre based on amd k62 400's i think maybe 450. limited to 512 mb ram. custom version of linux. own control panel. the basic lowdown on a raq is that they aint the greatest if your want to run a cgi HEAVY site. they dont have the fastest kit under the bonnet. the xtr version has faster processors but rackshack dont sell em. Theyre fine for static sites and php \ mysql as long as you dont expect to push them way too far. z555 03-11-2002, 06:17 PM Cobalt RAQ is very popular server appliance. It is so popular that have special forums on WHM where you can ask Cobalt RAQ specific questions. Cobalt RAQ is better to name a webhosting solution. It is a 1U server + Cobalt OS(RedHat linux based) + all required hosting software + web based management interface. So, it is ready to host sites just at the moment you plugged it. That's why it is so popular. We intensively used RAQs for shared hosting and still use them, but now all new accounts are setup on the new servers running PLESK control panel. It can turn in a long discussion what control panel what control panel is better. The main problem with control panels by easing some management tasks each control panel puts some limitations. And such limitations are always the main reason some people don't like this or that control panel. But almost each control panel allows performing most frequent account management tasks. equiller 03-11-2002, 10:15 PM so we've solved whether cobalt's are good, but I still would want to know if anyone has experience with z555 itself? if not, does anybody know of a host that will offer the following: 2 fully-functional (own content, email, and CGI) domains anywhere from 200-350mb+ of space 3-5GB of bandwidth at least 3 pop accounts at least 5 sub-domains (if only for one domain, that is okay) at least 2 FTP accounts (one per domain or one per sub-domain) CGI with Perl 5.x Custom error pages (.htaccess) SSI 24/7 Tech support by email, forum or helpdesk. Preferably based in North America but somewhere close and fast enough is okay, too. All this for under $10/mo or an annual fee that works out to be the equivalent? If anyone knows of this, please contact me!
