abeaudoin 12-18-2000, 08:01 AM Hello, Im currently looking after a web host who is
reliable and fast
the only feature needed is
- my own CGI-BIN directory
- access to raw log files with an error.log files
that I can clean every days
- acces to crowntab
- 1 email account or more
-Edward- 12-18-2000, 09:00 AM Not sure they support everything you need but - http://www.tera-byte.com - By far the best webhost i've ever used (=.
syanet 12-18-2000, 09:04 AM Despite the objections some people have about them, I recommend http://www.thinkhost.com . I was with them for a long time and had nothing but good experiences.
kunal 12-18-2000, 10:55 AM - acces to crowntab
This is something which is gonna be difficult to find on any shared server. If it is not necessary I would certainly recommend http://www.tera-byte.com .Another good host to look at is http://www.below10host.com or http://www.dynastyhost.com
Martie 12-18-2000, 12:12 PM Hi,

astralexis 12-18-2000, 12:55 PM hi,
what's crowntab and what can one do with it?
kunal 12-18-2000, 01:14 PM Hi Astra4, welcome to the board :)
Crontab is a UNIX command that creates a table or list of commands, each of which is to be executable by the operating system at a specified time.
Hope that explains it :)
MarkH 12-18-2000, 01:27 PM vservers (www.vservers.com) support crontab on their shared server packages (cheapest one i think is about US$55)....service is okay, althouhg doesn't seem as good as it used to be.

Wazeh 12-18-2000, 02:20 PM hmmm is it really that hard to find a host that supports crontab? I had a feeling that VDI based companies allow it. We allow it anyway. check all the other VDI based hosts too.
KDAWebServices 12-18-2000, 02:34 PM Yep, it's in the default CPanel themes so most VDI based hosts will offer it. There really is no danger to them offering it as it is run as the user and not as root or anything like that.
Check http://www.ultraspeedusa.com or http://www.ultraspeed.co.uk
Jaiem 12-18-2000, 02:49 PM A lot of hosts won't let you have your own update access to cron because it's too easy to bring the server to it's knees with a poorly coded script. It's a performance issue.

Very right. Badly written cron scripts or a run away script can bring the server to its kneews. Plus, allowing crontab scripts is a major security vulnerbility.
GeorgeC 12-18-2000, 03:05 PM I believe the crontab feature at vservers now require that you email support with the script you like to run, and they set it up. I noticed this when flipping through their user manual online. In the past, they allowed you to do this on your own.
abeaudoin 12-19-2000, 08:01 AM Ok, for the crowntab I can live without, since the site will be used only to show demos of the script that I will write, there is no real need for it right now, but the more important thing is to have a site availlable that take less than 20 sec to load a static page of 40K

Doesnt this largely depend on the visitors connection?

I seems that only a VDI based host can get away with such a post.
Whatever happened to the CDS?
<<Admin edit : thank you to Marshall for pointing the fact out. This has been remedied.>>
abeaudoin 12-19-2000, 11:27 PM Yes I agree, I forgot to mention the modem speed but I was refering to some host that I know who the speed is so slow that even with a cable modem connection it take more than 90 seconds to display that page.
Jaiem 12-19-2000, 11:44 PM Have you tried running a trace? It mightbe something between you andthe host, not necessarily the host's fault.
