I recently got a new VPS from Linode.com to play around with. I decided to write up a quick review about my experience with them.

Sign-Up: I decided to order a Linode 96 (Their lower end spec).I completed my signup and around 5 miniutes later my account was activated. Now how cool is that? 9/10

Network/Service: Once I got notification that my account was activated, I went to the members area also known as the LPM. The LPM is a web based system you can use to do tasks such as power on/off, Create or Re-Image, and add addional resources. I went into the distro wizard and created a new Red Hat image, since thats my favroite distro. I specified how big the image should be, how much swap to use and a root password. After pressing submit, the request was proccessed by the host server It was done in about 2 miniutes, Impressive. Then I just hit the "Boot" button and my linode was up and accessble in seconds. In the event that I want to re-image, I can simply delete the image and create a brand new one any time i want.

Speeds on the host end are very impressive now and things like compiles go along very quickly. Linode has private racks in two different datacenters: Hurricane Electric in Fremont and The Planet in Dallas. I was placed at TP and upload and download speeds are great. There are also plans to upgrade the service to the Xen virtulization software, which is faster than UML which all of their servers are currently using. 9/10

Support On the availability page, they claim that all of their products are "Considered an unmanaged service" which wasnt an issue for me. However, on the Linode irc channel (#linode on irc.oftc.net) there are plenty of people that are willing to help out, including the two guys that run linode, known as mikegrb and caker. There is also a small community forum on their website. 8/10

Overall Linode is a great product to do website hosting and linux testing/traning or even backup. I am a very satisfied customer :) and highly recomend them 8.5/10

I agree with datruesurfer. I have been with Linode since June 2004. Caker runs a top notch operation. The servers are unmananged (they update the kernals) but you have full run of the system. The good news is that they are beta testing Xen as a replacement to UML, so we should see some nice performance gains.

The Linode Platform Manager is fantastic. You can reboot, change images and install a bunch of distros.

I would recommend Linode to anyone looking for a root access server (but dont want to get a dedicated)

Cheers,

Ron
