View Full Version : How to stop email spammers
knockingknee 03-09-2002, 12:52 PM Believe it or not, I never got spammed before except on my hotmail accounts, so it really surprised me when it all begin sometime last week.
I am usually very careful about disclosing my main email address so I really wonder how some idiot got hold of it.
But that's besides the point
Right now, I just want to stop it.
The emails originate from different addresses but you can tell they're from the same company/person/idiot.
Oh and they ALL have someway you can unsuscribe.
I have "unsuscribed" on every email I got but I still get them!
Does anyone know what I can do?
I want to stop the mails, not just block them off.
Please help.
Chicken 03-09-2002, 01:16 PM If you've unsubscribed to them, you've more than likely confirmed that you read the emails and thus have been put on the special 'make sure you send this one spam' list. Email filters help...
knockingknee 03-09-2002, 01:35 PM Yeah, I kinda suspected that too. :(
Any idea how to set-up effective email filters on Outlook Express?
I have blocked all the previous senders but like I said, they appear to be from different email address.
.::DefCon::. 03-09-2002, 02:06 PM You can also Block a particular e-mail address in Outlook Express, under 'Tools' or 'Extra's', I believe.
;)
mahinder 03-09-2002, 02:32 PM wake up man, welcome to email. you can not stop these bas****ds. all you can do is activate your hotmail junk box filter and for some time put it on exclusive mode and add email to your contact from where you want to receive and then after some time amount of spam will be pretty less. and yeah, don't forget to check your junk mail folder once in a week you will find 1,2 usefull mail in junk mail box.
.::DefCon::. 03-09-2002, 04:30 PM Yeah I've got some bad experience with that filter too! It filters out your regular e-mail too sometimes... :(
Aralanthir 03-09-2002, 07:50 PM I made the same mistake on my first e-mail account, and unsubscribed to spam lists as well, but it only made things worse.
If you're really getting too many spam e-mails (at one point, I was receiving almost 20 spam mails per day), then an option you should look at is to get a new e-mail account.
With this new e-mail address, you should be more careful. For example, posting your e-mail address on your website or even posting your e-mail when signing people's guestbooks will guarantee you extra spam.
If you think that informing everyone about your new e-mail address would be too annoying, this site has some helpful tips of what you can do:

Hope that helped! :)
Change 03-09-2002, 08:30 PM In my experience you get spam on any account, no matter how careful you are..
I had to install a spam killer program, because the amount of spam was driving me crazy (avg. about 10 a day). And I am careful with my addresses!!
Using spamkiller now, and that stops like 98% of spam sent to me.. doesn't bother me at all anymore now :) About 1% or less of mail actually meant for me (real mail) is blocked out too, but I can recover that.. every week I check the 'deleted' mails for personal mails but only very rarely I find an email that should not have been deleted.
Spamkiller is heaven to me :D

What spamkiller program do you use and how/where did you get it?

That's the one, thanks. Sorry for not posting a link in my initial post!
Sainthax 03-10-2002, 06:10 AM a neat little trick I use is I have my main email jason@blabla.com, I create an alias like jason007@blabla.com and when the spam starts comming in I switch to something like jason09@blabla.com, I leave my reply address in the email software set to jason@blabla.com and the important people have the real address anyway so it kinda works out for me.

I work in a way similar to this. When I need to give an email on a website (to get a password, a news update, whatever), I use website.com@mydomain.com as my email address. This way I can see where spam sent to me originated from and easily put on a block as well. Only the friends I trust the most get my 'real' address.
imago-allan 03-10-2002, 10:02 AM Hi everyone!
There are several ways that I do:
1. Never reply to a spam email when I get one. Just delete it.
2. Don't place my email address on a website. Although sometimes I do. Hehe. :) Instead of the @ sign I use the +
symbol and just instruct the visitor to change it to @.
Alternative will be a form mailer.
3. I don't subscribe to a mailing list that I do not run. Haha. When I do want to subscribe to another mailing list, I used free email accounts.
4. When using free email accounts, I make sure that I uncheck all the promos and other send email choices like newsletters from the email provider and their advertisers.
That's it. And never give out your emails to anyone. Tell your friends not to use Cc: when they send out emails to a group list. Use BCC: instead!
I hope I help out in one way or the other.
:)
P.S. I only give out emails to a group of trusted people or to a secure forum.
akashik 03-10-2002, 10:03 AM That's exactly what I do as well. Use the domain name as the user. Lately I've been getting spam from ebay@******.net so I know ebay's at fault for all of them.
Points mentioned above too are important as well. Never list an e-mail address directly in guestbooks, or forums, never give it out unless you're sure it going to a good home... Just general tips that slow the growth of it down a little. It's just one of those net things though sadly. I have no idea how some of my e-mail addresses end up with spam in them, but that's just the way it is.

knockingknee 03-10-2002, 10:07 AM Well I actually have several addresses for signing up for stuff online, mailing lists etc.
I have always been careful with my "real" address, giving it only to people I know.
Still I must have let it slip recently because my real address is getting the spam!
And I can't change that because the alias is also my login user name for my ISP.
And all my old time friends use that address. I don't want to change it in case some long lost friend tries to reach me and can't. (Don't want to miss out on anything! :D )
knockingknee 03-12-2002, 06:35 AM Got an email from my host today.
So that's how!
Mxhub 03-12-2002, 10:48 PM http://www.arachnoid.com/lutusp/antispam.html look easy to install. I will try it out soon.
Regard spamkiller program, the program look great.
avara 03-13-2002, 05:25 PM On my different email accounts, I used to get 100 spam emails a day. I've managed to halve this to 50 by blocking some addresses, etc. But the bottom line is that unfortunately, you can not completely stop spam. And by installing spam filters, you risk losing important messages too!
If you just click delete on the spam messages, and filter certain words such as "viagra" (and you know what I'm talking about) from the subject lines at the server level if you have access, I'd say you'll end up spending less than 2 minutes a day deleting the stuff. That's still 12 hours a year though.
