I see the term PR1, PR2 - 7 etc, etc..

But can't find an explanation of what they mean!

Anyone, please?

PageRank is Google's measure of the importance of the page
I think only googl Admin know how to calculate this number.

there are lots of factors to do with it such as how many pages link to you etc

So how do people find out their rating?

When selling a site, people often quote their PR rating

Look for the respective site under Google Directory (http://directory.google.com/), or get a Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/). This site (http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html) also has some useful information.

Searcg google for "page rank", you may also want to search for "seo" or "search engine optimizations"

Pagerank (http://www.pagerank.net) offers a pagerank-checking tool.

PR4 actually isn't all too bad, especially since you haven't known about it so you weren't working to optimize it.

Are there any guides, hints or tips anywhere about increasing it?
Thanks!

FYI - http://forums.iwdn.net/viewtopic.php?t=1659

There are some major changes on the horizon for how search engines handle indexing and ranking. Tread carefully.

Oooh, sounds very ominous. Care to elaborate?

And thank you very much for the link, will get reading!

Ah, some serious stuff in there.

I might just let it stay naive and natural then!

Natural is good, but effective writing and good language devices in communication will be beneficial for both visitors and search engines. The discussion to which I linked isn't saying stop optimizing, it's just saying look at optimization from a completely different point of view. The day may come when the best SEO specialists are the people who've been involved in traditional public relations since before the Web :)
