Which ones would you recommend putting on the cobalt raq3?.

Basically, they are all ok. I just wouldn't recommend running out and installing an update that *just* came out. Wait a week and read the archives. There's always some brave soul who dares to update :)

Thats the page i went to -

theres some on that page i don't understand what the use of them is thats why i asked if anyone could recommend patches. So basically installing all them on that page would be fine?. And wouldnt cause any problems?.

Cobalt couldn't even say that :)

Basically, there's two theories. One is that once you see that nobody has freaked out on the mailing list, it is safe to install (more or less). The other is that, 'if it ain't boke, don't fix it'.

Anything you install on a computer can create conflicts (you should realize this from installing any thing on a windows pc and getting the blue screen of death). If you have things installed that are custom, or just generally have tweaked somnething, one of these updates *may* bugger up the beast.

Are you a gamblin' man? :)

I was looking at the Cobalt patch site that you guys just posted. Wow.. there are so many of them.

So is it a good idea to install all of them? Coz for many of them I dunno what they do and whether they are applicable to myself.

What did you guys do?

I install most of them. Often they just patch up a security risk, and that's never bad :)

When we load a new box up we put them all on.

once a box is up we tell our customers to run all the security patches and only install the fix patches if they are having problems with that service (ftp, etc).

We recently leased a RAQ3. Is there a way of telling what security patches were already installed on it? Should the security patches show up in the Installed Software screen of the Admin utility or is there another way to determine the level at which the system has been patched?

Thanks

yes if you go to mantainance-updates you will see a list of whats been done to it before you recieved it, if nothing is listed nothing was done. if you got one from us it hasnt had any updates applied so you dont have to look :)

Speaking of which, it has been a bit since hey've released an all-in-one OS upgrade that takes care of all the latest bugs. It is about time, doncha think? I just recently checked and there are plenty listed now.

I still have to install that errrr... big 27 MB one (ish, not sure exactly without looking at it). I haven't installed an update after that one.

Thankx for the word, I hate cleaning those oil stains off the garage floor.

Do you think your host would install all those patches for you if you asked? It would take me forever to install all of them on a 36k modem some of them patches are big files if they will not do it what should i do start at the very bottom and work my way up?

Ehm, ChrisL, you could of course also simply copy
and paste the url into the install software screen.
The RAQ3 will then download the file itself - and
considering the RAQ has a fast connection installing
patches through this way will always be faster.

the new OS update or the glibc one? If it's the glibc one, then we cant install the OS update since the glibc is a prereq...

Isn't it fun when your server company releases updates that render your server worst than it was before?

Of course, the phone company likes it because you then use Cobalt's free 1-800 number :P

Would installing the glibc update break the Zend optimizer? (I downloaded the Zend optimizer for glibc2.0) But I guess I can always fix that :)
