View Full Version : do pop-ups freeze your browser?
Chicken 03-09-2002, 12:04 AM Just wondering. Do pop-up ads freeze your browser so you can't do anything while it thinks about loading? I'm not sure why, but this happens to me. It is annoying. Page starts to open and then freezes, while something spawns partially, then finally loads.
Phrozen 03-09-2002, 12:26 AM They always do that for me. I can't say the reason for it happening to you, but it happens to me becasue my cpu is constantly maxed out.
Jedito 03-09-2002, 12:44 AM Same here with IE 6, but not with Opera/linux
Akash 03-09-2002, 12:44 AM It happens to me too :-(
I've traced it to 2 things:
1) if the popup is graphic intensive (they usually are) and you are already using lots of system resources (i've got usually 10-11 windows open at a time) then it'll freeze all iexplorer windows.
2) IE6 just has problems where it thinks about loading the popup's content, but just freezes after creating the window
Solution: POP-UP add killers. The one I like is at http://www.meaya.com/
Mxhub 03-09-2002, 12:48 AM Yes. The pop-up temporarily freeze my IE browser. You might want consider install a pop-up ads killer with the browser. You will be 110% happier with one install. :)
SoftWareRevue 03-09-2002, 12:49 AM Yep. If I ain't runnin PopUp Killer (http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller/index.html), I have the same problems.
But, like others have eluded to; it seems to be system resource related.
Sain Cai 03-09-2002, 01:38 AM Only when I visit 'certain':D websites.
There was once that no matter how fast I tried to close them, 5 more would pop up, they never stopped!!
The were just coming and coming and coming (no pun intended :stickout
akashik 03-09-2002, 01:48 AM *wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more, say no more* ;)
But yes, same here in IE6. If I hit a site with a pop-up or pop-under, I get some brief freeze time as well. While I understand the need for advertising on the web, it certainly doesn't increase my urge to click a banner that's just locked up my computer, for however long

Studio64 03-09-2002, 02:29 AM RAM!!!! You NEED RAM.... That was my problem w/ a few computers in my network...
Just get RAM... It's cheaper than beer..
kmb999 03-09-2002, 08:36 AM No, pop-ups don't freeze my browser. They never have and I don't see why they would.
Skeptical 03-09-2002, 09:05 AM There are some new popups and popunders that are very indidious. They purposely freeze the popup for say, 30 seconds at a time. During that time you cannot close it. After 30 seconds it pops another new window up at you. Every 30 seconds after that it does the same thing over again.
I think they probably code some javascript to freeze the window so you just can't close the damn thing.
MGCJerry 03-09-2002, 10:13 AM popup ads?... whats that? ;)
I got a ad killer installed and it works great, sometimes too great. Every now and then though a few ads slip in, but at least the code can be added to the filters.
Ahhhhh..... no flashing banners, annoying javascript, slow java banners. Now... Once ads become flash enhanced, I will add flash to my filters too :)
The internet is so much more enjoyable without that "if this banner is flashing", "shoot 3 ducks and win a prize", those little annoying alert boxes, exit popups, etc...

i've got 256 one one cpu and 512 on the other.....still freezes, IE6 uses a lot of resources during the time where it tries to open the new popup window
Softerweb 03-09-2002, 12:17 PM Yes, I agree, it has nothing to do with ram or processor. Javascript was actually much faster back when I was using win95 and IE 5.1, on a pentium 233 with 64 mb ram.
The reason why these popup-ads are freezing your browser and utilizing 100% of the processor resources is because of the "options" part of the Window object. If you omit the "window style" options of window.open then the window/popup-ad will open fast. If you declare that the window should have width x and height y then you will see the behavior discussed in this thread.
A little off topic, but related to the "window" object of javascript, I just read an article describing a hole in IE that let client-side javascript execute programs on the users computer. Might not be news, however still scary since MS has`nt fixed it. I tested one of the example scripts, it opened my calculater. The other test script was supposed to log me off Windows, naturally I passed on that one.
Chicken 03-09-2002, 12:46 PM Ok, so it's not just me *whew*. Yeah, the computer I have now is PIII933 with 384MB of ram, so it isn't the slowest out there. Hopefully good enough to serve up web pages :D - but I am guilty of having 10+ windows open at the same time, which surely doesn't help.
It isn't tooooo bad of an issue with a single popup, but some sites have popups on *every* page, which gets annoying (not only would I not click on an ad that freezes the computer as Greg said, I also make it a point to not visit the site again).
Even worse are the pop ups which simply load to launch another popup (double freeze), and of course the ones which load one after another after another...
Timothy 03-09-2002, 01:01 PM Yeah I have the same problem, but I'm just about to download POW from http://www.analogx.com to take care of things.
priyadi 03-09-2002, 01:22 PM Doesn't matter... if it doesn't freeze your browser, it is still annoying. Get a browser that can disable popups, almost all good browser out there can do that.
knockingknee 03-09-2002, 01:30 PM IMHO, pop-ups that lead to more pop-ups are usually on Warez, Pornography or MP3 sites. Been to either one of these my friend? ;)
When I get multiple pop-ups and try to close them too fast, my
browser freezes, then I get some dll error, whatever that is.
Using IE5.5, PIII800 256Ram W98
Would really love an ad killer. One question though, is if the ad killer would "kill" legitimate pop-ups, like some announcements or
stuff that I wouldn't want to miss.
Granting that, can any suggest a really good ad killer??
Thanks

YES!!! It always does that on my pc !! I hate it!
What causes it? I'm using Windows 98 SE... what about you Chickenboy? :D
Good to know I'm not the only one having this problem... :)

It happens. Most can be temporarily bypassed or disabled, but I dont like popups of anykind unless I click a button or a link and it popups for a legitamite cause.
Here is the one I use and it looks like he has a new version out :)

I was actually just on an MP3 site looking for the song Be My Baby (seems to be a popular combination of words). I get these things in my head, ask the kids about it (most haven't heard the song and just think I'm crazy), ask others at work, and have to go looking for a recording to find out what actually sings the version I'm thinking of. Song is by the Ronettes if anyone else is curious. (Co-workers guessed Platters or Shirelles).
I also check out freeware and template/graphics sites which seem to have the same problem as warez sites. Many just lead to lists of sites, not to actual sites, which is annoying, with multiple popups all over the place.
Studio64 03-09-2002, 04:10 PM my 866 running

Weatherbug :) (Hey.. I like it)
And assorted other thingys....
Look at the pic... I seem to be fine...
Mike the newbie 03-09-2002, 06:19 PM I have no freezing problems caused by pop-ups in Opera.
bitserve 03-09-2002, 09:29 PM Have you tried this registry hack?
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/536/
Explorer by default only allows so many connections. And opening a popup might put one on hold while it finishes.
If that doesn't fix it, try this:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/964/
ToastyX 03-09-2002, 10:50 PM Nope, but I'm not using Internet Explorer, nor Windows. ;)

...
Windows is unstable enough as it is, without hacking random parameters in the registry in order to encourage Internet Explorer not to hang.

Oh yeah, that too. which is so totally annoying and usually surmounts to nothing except frustration.
I have given up trying to look for such things online already.
When i'm owrking on my usual computer (PIII 500MHz/64MB RAM) it doesn't :) but when i'm working on my other computer (AMD K6-2 350MHz/32MB RAM) it does :(
At the moment i'm working on the AMD K6-2 350MHz/32MB RAM:(
Chicken 03-10-2002, 10:43 PM I used an AMD K6/2-450 before this machine, worked fine, though I'm a bit of a power pig. Your problem isn't the processor, if you upped that ram to 256-512 you'd be in pretty good shape with that machine. 32 will kill ya'.
