I would like to get your opinion on forums
What board would you get. This my be a silly question since one of them is free.
Vbulletin or Ikonboard
And why did you make that choice
VB is around 250 dollars Canadian, Ikonboard is free. Ikonboard can be made to look like a VB if you so choose.

Ikon board isen't PHP is it??
And wht should it have PHP.

akashik 03-09-2002, 10:16 AM PHP based forum scripts are known to be easier on server resources as well as being thought of as faster.
More than a few webhosts just ban Perl based boards nowdays due to trouble with them in the past.
Personally I find PHP boards a lot easier to set up for some reason as well.

JMD,
Greg's explanation is where I was going when I suggested a PHP/MySQL based board. They tend to be faster and also a bit easier to back up since everything is on one database. Most of all many host have banned CGI/perl based boards.

VB because it is PHP/MySQL. IB is Perl/MySQL so it uses more system resources.

hahah... I always find it funny, you can make anything look like vB... But can you make it run like vB? Do a search on it, and then do a search on a vB and see which one is faster....

Did you actually do this? Yes, the search in 1.x phpBB was slow. The search in phpBB 2 is extremely fast (although it does take some extra db space).
I did a search for "mysql" on 2 large phpBB sites and the main vBulletin site.
Main phpBB 2site (http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB2/index.php) 40K posts. The query took 0.869092 for 809 results returned.
phpBB mods (hacks) site (http://mods.phpbb.com/index.php) 16K posts. The query took 0.570845 seconds and 264 results returned.
Main vBulletin site (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php?). There are 40K posts. I can't tell you how long it took because there is not timing info. But from my watch, it's much slower.

i have being using vbulletin but the more i look and see phpBB2, i find it much better than vbulletin. Why? COS it is FREE lol

I didn't say you could make it *run* like vB. I didn't mean to compare that way either. It's just looks..
It would be quite hard to compare both anyway. vB is the best, but you pay a nice fee for it as well. And with phpBB2 you're not paying a single dime and still you have a board that comes very close to vB. As posted above, you should not compare with phpBB1.x at all, the new release is a giant step forward.
But.. if you have the money.. go for vB. If you wanna save some money, go for phpBB2 (altho you might wanna wait for Final Release), imho the second best board out there.
