View Full Version : Plesk installed after the fact

How difficult would it be to install Plesk on an existing server with existing sites already setup with webmin?

I don't have a need for Plesk right now, nor am I wild about its interface, but I may want an inexpensive control panel 6 or 9 months down the road. I wonder what would be involved with addiung it after the fact or what general things I would have to be careful of to keep my RH 7.2 server 'compatible' (well, maybe just 'not totally incompatible') with upcoming versions of Plesk, say version 3?

Unless all of your services are setup as RPM's, I don't think it's gonna happen. With the RPM install you may be able to get away with having existing packages, but it is really meant to be on a clean install. PSA cannot control anything that it does not create. So even if you were able to install it, your existing clients wouldn't be in the db.

You would be better off just backing up your user's data, and starting over with a clean install. Then import your users & their data back in.

That's ok, because the 'existing clients' would only be me and my own many domains which I don't really need a control panel for. Well, OK if the two could coexist and Plesk could be installed and function without knocking out the sites I created before, which it sounds like is a no.
You would be better off just backing up your user's data, and starting over with a clean install.
That's what I feared. But did I read correctly (pretty sure I read this, but couldn't believe it) that there is no quick upgrade between versions, so some people do the backup, clean install, and import just to upgrade versions? I must be mistaken, as that sounds worse than ensim...

No. I have heard that the newest version will use this method, but it's really just a package upgrade release. As far as I know they are sticking with the install/upgrade package that they used in all of the other 2.x versions.

For best result, I'd suggest you to install Plesk on a clean server with Redhat Linux installed and no Apache.

If you are using Redhat 7.2, just wait until Plesk 2.5 is released (should be very soon next week).
