View Full Version : Success in Restoring a RaQ3i

As ya'll know from previous posts, I could not restore a RaQ3i. It turned out to be comedy of errors.

Here is what I found out from the technician who helped me out.

1. Try to only restore with a cross-over cable. I was trying to use a hub and had no success.

2. Use a short (7') cross-over cable. It does make a difference. The cable I was using was a 50' cross-over cable. The technician tested cable using a device that transmited and received signals and the cable passed. However, it would not link the RaQ3i to the network card.

3. Prior to the start-up of the RaQ3i for the restore, hold down the E button and then turn on the RaQ3i. DO NOT LET GO OF THE E BUTTON AT ANY TIME! This will restore the CMOS. This is a very important step to do. While holding the E button, you will see a message on the RaQ3i, CMOS Restored. At this point, while still holding down the E button, turn off the RaQ3i.

Follow the steps for the OS Restore. I used the RaQ4r Restore CD as there is a performance gain in using this version.

I am very happy now :D , but frustrated that this was a very long process :flamethr: .

Now to figure how to configure these things :bawling: . I am reading the DNS & Bind by O'Reilly and it appears to be good!

I definitely owe you a beer. A real beer! If you're ever in Atlanta, drop me a line and I'll pay up.

This CMOS restore tip is priceless. Did a Sun technician tell you to do this, or did you pick it up from someone else? I've restored many a RaQ, but recently acquired 5 that failed the restore process until I restored the CMOS. This was a very timely hint!!

Thanks,

Brandon

Anyone know the procedure to restore the CMOS on a RAQ2??? I got a bunch of those laying around that I can not use for anything because the restore fails.

We bought our RaQ3i from a small computer supply company out here in CA. I saw him doing that and asked him why. He said that was the only way to ensure the restore would start. He had too many restores to fail due to this.

What part of Atlanta? Many years ago, I lived off Piedmont and Buckhead, where the old K-Mart was (I do not know if it is still there or not). They built the train station across the street from me. Then we moved out to Dunwoody, and then out to Norcross, off Beaver Ruin Rd.

You must be talking about Lindbergh. Across from the Gold Club? Heh. That KMart is still there, though I think that may be one of the 13 they're closing around Atlanta next month.

When I got married we lived just down Peachtree, in Brookhaven.

Then we moved out to Dunwoody, and then out to Norcross, off Beaver Ruin Rd.

We're now in Roswell. Really close to the (sales) office. But the data centers are downtown, one on Peachtree one on Marietta, and the morning commute is a real pain. :puke:

Give me a heads up and I'll honor my word on that beer.....
