Hi!
I have an idea of a service that I consider developing and I would like your opinios about it:
Well, I think of a service that sends you an sms whenever a certain email arrives at your inbox.
The system will check your inbox every XX minutes. If a new email arrives that does not match your filter settings (sender adderss /subject ) an sms alert will arrive at you phone.
I have two question for you:
1. Would you pay for such a service?
2. How much would you pay for it?
3. Would you trust this service with your email password details?
Thanks

By does not match your filter settings do you mean.. not match what you have set up? Because what would happen if you got spammed? Then you would get spammed on your cell phone too! AAH!! :P

no, say that you want to be notified for messages from kathy@kathy.com, you set the recipient to: kathy@kathy.com

I'm pretty sure i've seen such a service before. I remembered using it briefly but it didn't work out.

It was provided by BT free of charge. You could ring up and an automated machine would then read the email out to you, and you could reply back over the phone.

They stopped it long ago, i think it didn't work out well and WAP enabled phones and GPRS ready PDA's that auto synced with the mailserver proved more of a better solution to use.

Keep in mind you're going to need a real gateway into the SMS network to provide this kind of service. Providers don't take kindly to sending hundreds of thousands of emails into the SMS network from the same IP. If you're going to make some money, they'll want a piece.

I think we have. But anyway:

Question 1: I would not pay for it
Question 2: I would not pay for it
Question 3: Not really, and wouldn't use it

Like i said. A PDA with net connection is better than using such a service. When we were limited by technology to use that kind of service, then maybe i would consider it. But now that better technology exisits which is cheaper, easier and more convenient, i would not have any use for such a service.

Not being harsh or anything (sorry if i am), but thats my opinion of it.

well for one there is a service called AIM which features SMS. There are programs that already interface the two. It wouldn't be we related and that would be a nasty way of doing it.

An application/module of a mail client is all that is needed. This module would just send an AIM message to the number specified upon receipt of a new message. Of course you could set parameters as well. Such as only send on this address, or block these addresses, or send on all email except for spam identified mail, etc., etc.

Thanks for your input guys...
Maybe I will just offer this service to my customers as an extra service.
