I have a concern. As of recently, I am a business co-owner and I own the company domain which is a .org domain. I checked and for both .com and .net domains the bidding starts at $1000+ and an asking price of $3000. My concern is, say someone was to purchase one or both of the domains and start a business in my field would considerably hurt our sales. Would you recommend changing company name? and purchasing all .com .net .org domains? I really dont want to hold this off much longer so I would like to know what route should I take. My main concern is the hurt in sales.
note: no I dont have the budget to put out $4000+ for a domain names.
thanks again.

If you haven't yet built a reputation around your current name, my advice would be to find a new unique name that has the dotcom and dotnet (as well as other extensions) available.
For our sites, we secure as much of the Internet "real estate" around our names as possible. Grab all of the extensions you think might be applicable, as well as hyphenated versions, plurals and any common misspellings you can think of.
For one of our sites we have over thirty domains registered and directed to the main site....The last thing you want is to spend a lot of time building a reputaion only to have someone else ride your coat tails with a similar domain.

Yes I know .org isn't the best business domain name, but our intensions weren't so clear back when we started. I will purchase a new set of domain names. I much rather take some losses now than say a year from now when things are really taking off.
thanks.
