View Full Version : How bad is Directi?

I opened a reseller account with Directi recently, mainly to register a large number of .IN domains for a few clients.

While some features appeared good (e.g. no minimum spend requirement, unlike enom etc), others, particularly regards payments appear to be very unfriendly.

They won't take CC until you send them copies of the credit card. Even then, they will make you pay for the merchant fee (an unspecified %-age at that too, which means you don't know whether you are being ripped off until it is too late). Besides, in these days of ID theft etc., I don't really feel comfortable sending my CC details to India.

If you send them money by wire, again you are at their mercy as you have no recourse at all if something goes wrong or if there is a dispute. Besides of course the substantial cost of sending a wire (~$40) AND the fees that Directi will deduct at their end from the wire proceeds.

OK, so I thought I would use PayPal. I don't have a PayPal account and use it very rarely. So I go and make a payment through Paypal using my CC. Directi sends me a virtually instantaneous aclnowledgment of the funds being received, thanks to an automated script no doubt. But they wont apply the funds to my account - until I send them copies of my CC! Nowhere in their site does it state that customers paying through PayPal must send copies of their CC if they do not have a "verified PayPal" account.

I call them long distance and after being put on hold for ever and being made to listen to crappy rap music I get this awfully rude Indian woman who basically says "take it or leave it". I ask to speak to a manager / supervisor - it is now 11.15 AM in Bombay - and I am told that no one else is available.

I know that Directi has lots of clients here on WHT. So what am I doing wrong and why do people do business with a company like this?

I haven't used paypal with Directi but sending them scanned copis of CC by email was safe and they verified it. Later I was able to send payments with CC very easily.

You seem to want to do business with a company you don't trust and that is not a good basis for a business relationship.

Most "cheap" registrars will make a charge for paying by credit card or paypal to keep margins tight it is certainly not a scam, fraud is a major problem in the hosting industry so i would be pleased to see them making some checks rather than criticising them.

For the record I have both CC and Paypal registered on my Directi account and been using them for almost 2 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

I talked to them few days ago.. very fast and nice support(even in chat). I like this company... never had problems or tiffs.
I think you have to avoid sending cc number to small companies, but.. its a big one, you better trust about their policy..:)
How much is merchant fee?

If you have a verified paypal account the funds will be accredited instantly, it's just that you surely used an unverified paypal account and it's right to ask the customer for some kind of documents to prevent frauds.

There is no such thing as sending credit card details by email safely. Email is not a secure form of communication and I would not do business with a company that requests this (if they did in fact request this).

For me it worked right, Directi informed me the person whom I shoud email details that was over a year ago. Sending by fax is another option if you feel unsecure.

None of which means that sending an email with credit card details is a secure form of communication. It's not the problem of who you send it to, more a question that it is a trivial matter for a snooper to pull details from an email in transit. Any company that encourages clients to send credit details via email is acting grossly irresponsibly and makes you wonder about their attitude to online security..

True, and don't forget the phone calls can be monitored and snail mail can be tampered with, so the moral of the story is, don't trust anyone you do business with and don't give credit card details out by email, phone, mail, fax, sms or even carrier pigeon.

In fact tear your card up in two and eat it to prevent anyone from having access to it.

Directi has best support out of any domain reseller... you will not get any better service than them .. trust me. They have a 24/7 online live chat as well so I dont know what people are talking about. I've been with them for a while always use paypal to add funds without a problem. Of course my account with paypal is verified, so the problem lies between you and paypal not directi. Verify your account with paypal and everything should run smoothly.

All Enom renewals are being transfered to Directi.

So far I've been happy with them :)

Have you really used their live chat?
How many hours do you wait on live chat or phone? I wait for almost 6-7 hours but still cannot get help. This happens a lot.

I have called them twice and they fixed my problems both times (not immediately but in no more than a few hours).

The last time I used their trouble tickets system they replied within 12 hours and answered all my questions.

If you are really in the webhosting biz then placing a 2 minute intl' call is something you can afford.

Targeting some country is not an decent idea. Business should be bind in trust. You should not do business with them if you are not feeling comfortable in verfying yourself. Directi needs to verfy before someone rips them. Just Verify your paypal once and fax them your cc copy thats it they will never ask you to veryfy again.
Noting is safe in this cyber age.
