View Full Version : Jumpline is killing me...
replicant 03-07-2002, 08:01 PM Ever since Jumpline 'upgraded' their service I have had NO EMAIL for my company! That's right folks, they said (this morning) that it was a DNS problem that would resolve itself in a couple of hours.
Here it is, end of the day and still no fix. Worse yet, you can't get through Jumpline's phone (busy) and they refuse to answer emails.
Maybe they're going out of business? I'm moving. This has been the most unprofessional, shady business dealings I've ever encountered.
Anyone else?
cbaker17 03-07-2002, 08:19 PM Jumpline from what i understand is moving away from alabanza, this means setting up a completely new infrustructure, software backend, billing backend, etc... I would be a little bit patience as this is not something that is easily done.

jwharmby 03-07-2002, 10:19 PM DNS problem, schmee-NS problem. It was accessing the new domain IP fine, then bouncing the mail with an error (failed on DATA command. Remote host said: 503 5.0.0 Need MAIL command). They just don't know how to configure a mail server.
All my CGI got trashed; turned out they'd changed all the paths, and copied half the files over without preserving the permissions.
The final straw for me was when I finally got into FTP to look at the CGI files, and discovered they'd 'upgraded' to the new servers using a backup dated ... February 21.
Jumpline's response to this? "Dear valued customer: The old system is still up and running. You can pull what ever data you need off of it that you need. I do urge you to do this in a timely manner for it will not be up for much longer. Here is your connection information to the old system..."
You mean, I pay them $14.95 a month so they can tell me to do what they're too clueless or lazy to do themselves?
I've already cancelled my account. Now looking for a web hosting company that's actually capable of doing web hosting. Jumpline aren't.
jwharmby 03-07-2002, 10:31 PM Charles, I beg to differ about patience.
Sure, this was a big job and would take time and effort.
Jumpline not only didn't take the time or the effort, they've also demonstrated that (a) they don't know how to configure a mail server, (b) they don't know about chmod permissions on CGI files, (c) they don't take proper backups and (d), worst of all, they don't seem to understand that (c) might be a big deal to a paying customer.
Therefore, I have about as much patience for Jumpline as I would for a midwife who comes rushing through the door when the baby's head is already poking out, carrying nothing but a chisel.
replicant 03-07-2002, 10:41 PM I have have to beg to differ too about patience. Is this a professional company or not? I don't care how big a job is, if they're not up to the task, put it off -- don't leave your customers hanging in the wind losing business and face!
This really has to be the most rinky-dink operation I've ever dealt with. I'm going on every board and telling my story.
I really have to wonder if they're going out of business...? They sure don't have the manpower to answer emails or phones.
Makes you wonder. Will make a lot of potential (and current) customers wonder if they are fly-by-night.
Blieb 03-08-2002, 12:28 PM Tuesday night I realized things were wrong ... Wed I called to complain ...
Yesterday was the last straw. All lines are busy and no email support has been gettin' responses ... they're obviously LOADED with complaints and cancellations.
I set up a reseller account for Outcrier.com on Venturesonline.com ... put epock under it.
End of story for me n' jumpline!
w00t!
Now I just have to wait a few days for ALL DNS servers to update ...
avara 03-09-2002, 10:33 PM As far as I can tell, Jumpline made this move in order to increase their profits, as Alabanza is quite expensive. Now while server moves do happen, and there is nothing wrong with seeking a better solution outside of Alabanza, I think moves like this should always be carefully planned.
In this instance, from what I've read both here and on Sitepoint, this move unfortunately lacked planning. And I don't think Jumpline can offer any excuses, as other hosts have successfully migrated hundreds of even thousands of clients to different data centers; take VO for instance, they moved their entire operation to their own data center with different IP addresses with only a few very minor issues.
Have they offered any free months of hosting as compensation?
three 03-09-2002, 10:48 PM Here at T3link we are seeing a lot of jumpline customers come our way over the ssh and mail issues.
I never understand companies like verisign, network solutions, and others that intentionally create problems for their customers!

I don't think they are intentionally causing problems for their customers. At the end of the day it probably just comes down to sloppy business practises.
heinz 03-10-2002, 07:19 AM If the poll were still open, I would like the option "all of the above".
It is kind of amazing to get an email from jumpline characterizing their changes as exciting and how they looked forward to them. What they didn't say in so many words is they were about to break every perl script, every email account, have many consecutive hours of downtime, lose 3 weeks of changes to some files on the domains, and remove features some sites depended on. After the changes, they then sent an email saying that the response has been "overwhelmingly positive". This despite the fact the mail also says they have "35 technical team members and 20 customer service representatives working around the clock...". The response I received for an issue was that they were not able to answer it due to the "large number of questions" and instead just mailed a form letter and refused to look at it.
I've happily switched my domains to another hosting company.
iisset 03-10-2002, 10:14 AM Sounds like jumpline is having some tight line being pulled...
:stickout
NexDog 03-10-2002, 10:30 AM Keep it up Jumpline, the migrations are fantastic!
almex 03-12-2002, 04:12 PM Jumpline is killing me...
Jumpline did the exact same thing with my website files.
See the message I just posted "Jumpline Class Action Lawsuit ?" and if you feel Jumpline should be held accountable - please vote on the poll.
Good luck in your recovery efforts.
John B.
