What operating systems do you support?

Apoc
03-31-2005, 01:29 PM
Sorry forgot to mention that.

Fedora Core 1, 2, 3
CentOS
Debian
FreeBSD
Windows 2000 Server
Windows 2003 Web
Windows 2003 Standard
Trustix (press release coming soon - if you would already like to have this installed please contact sales@solidhost.com)

Furthermore we are able to setup just about any other Linux distribution, but a small additional service fee will apply then.

RedHat Enterprise Linux is also supported, however we do not provide licenses - it's probably a good idea to look into CentOS instead since that's identical to RHEL.

IRC is strictly disallowed on our network. For that reason we also don't really need DDoS protection services. All of our switches have 1000mbps connectivity to our core routers, so if one server gets attacked, another server will barely notice anything.

We can do customer DDoS filtering solutions (hardware based) but those are rather expensive.

Just because you don't allow IRC, does not mean that you will not be attacked.

That is correct, I've never said that we, or our customers won't get attacked. Our own shared hosting servers do have DDoS protection setup, dedicated servers (by default) do not.

If a customer would like to have a good hardware based firewall setup we can take care of that, it's just not included in the basic price.

We are currently working hard on our new website. Our current website lacks a lot of important information like this - I apologize for that.

Standard management level includes:

Initial service configuration and assistance on services configuration

Troubleshooting: if your server doesn't work well we will help you isolate the problem and solve it.

Updates: we will update/upgrade your server software whenever needed (per customer request)

Control panel support: if you buy a control panel through us (cPanel, Plesk, Helm, or any other) we will fully support the product.

Service recovery - if a service is failed we will help you recover it

Hack recovery - if your server has been hacked we will help you find out how the hacker got in, and provide you with consultancy on how this problem can be solved (keep in mind that if the hacker has damaged the server badly there may be no other option but to entirely reinstall the OS. There is a $40 one-time fee for OS reinstallations).

Hardware will always be immediately replaced at our expense. This applies when the hardware has already failed or when the hardware is not functioning properly.

Dos monitoring - we monitor the servers for incoming and outgoing attacks, based on sudden changes in traffic. We will help you stop any incoming attack, and if your server is involved in an outgoing attack we will help you find the compromise.

Uptime monitoring - your server will be monitored for uptime at all times. If your server shows offline on our monitors we will be notified immediately by the system and we can either take action immediately by rebooting your server, or we can just notify you (this is up to the customer).

Basic security setup - per customer request we will setup basic security packages such as a firewall, intrusion detection systems and integrity checkers.

----

All of the above is included for free. Additionally it's also possible to get a more advanced management package. The costs entirely depend on the requirements of the customer, so for inquiries please contact sales@solidhost.com.

We have several security experts within our team, so we are able to secure your server in every single way.

I hope this answers your questions.

Yes there are two ways to do that:

1. We can increase the monthly fee. To calculate how much you would have to increase the monthly fee to get $0 setup, devide the setup fee by 6 and add that to the monthly fee. (for instance: if the setup is $60 - add $10/month to the monthly fee).

2. Pay annually - if you pay on a yearly basis we will waive the setup fee at no additional monthly fee.

Hope this helps :)

Good luck with your sales Andre :)

SolidHost is one of the truely professional and reliable hosts out there, they come highly recommended.

I think Andre explained sufficiently that their own VPS and Hosting servers are behind a firewall; however by default their dedicated server offerings are not.

I think this is because certain tweaks can affect things such as the frontpage extentions. Certain users may want these to be fully working and therefore can't have the security tweaks.

Plus, if solidhost were to have these tweaks as default and the frontpage extensions did suffer, who's saying that the customer wont complain because of these tweaks, therefore it if up to the user to ask for these tweaks to be complete

Thank you for your comments Adam, highly appreciated :)

Also thank you for your comment xaviac, what you say is correct - different users have different needs.

It is still possible to setup a hardware based firewall without really affecting anything like that, however these are quite expensive if we'd set those up for all servers, and most servers simply don't need it. The only result would be that our servers would become more expensive, that's not what most people want :)

I am tired of cleaning this thread. Just a reminder that trashing ads can result in the suspension of your account. This is not the place for a debate.

Hi Andre,

We currently don't provide DDoS protection, but we are planning to start offering that early 2006.
