Hi,

I am interested in these so called "unlimited" plans, purely from a research point of view.

Has anyone dealt with companies with these "unlimited" plans? What was your experience with them?

Thanks.

Unlimited is not the favourite word around here I guess :)

But we'll see from the poll :stickout

True.

People on WHT don't like the unlimited plans, simply because of the fact its trying to promise the world and deliver a cup of coffee.

I don't think I have heard from someone who has had a first hand experience of an "unlimited" plan. I mean, someone somewhere must be clocking up 500GB of data transfer on his web ac, and the company are delivering it!

Thanks for the post.

Didn't Bahres post almost the same poll only a few days go?

Bahres asked "Is unlimited bandwidth selling?". I on the other hand asked about the experience of using these plans.

Well, I've had personal experience with an "Unlimiited" host.
Guess how I voted.

They were Fasthost resellers (unknown by me at the time).
When they got cut off by Fasthosts . . . . . well :(

Hi,

Thanks for all the votes.

Can the person who voted excellent please give more details. I mean, how much webspace and bandwidth are you using?

Regards.

Its a rule of life there is nothing for free and there is nothing unlimited.

I beg to differ.

There are lots of things in life that are free:
1. Obtaining kids.
2. Air.
3. Dirty water.
4. Food at a dinner party,
5. Drinks at a wedding.

The list goes on and on and on and on....
:D :)

I think the interesting thing is that a percentage of customers will actually repsond to "free" or "unlimited" bs. Who are these customers? Have they no wits? Were they dropped on their heads as a baby? :)

My sister once tried to raise turkeys and found out they are so stupid they will drown by looking up at the rain that is hitting them on the head! I kid you not. She called the only turkey to survive Einstein. As customers go, we have a few Einsteins out there. They are unfortunately the first ones to buy a background image for a website for $700. And they are the first ones to rush to the sound of "unlimited". They are the first ones to get burned.

Hi (and thanks for the post).

I am one of them!

The fact is, I think I liked the fact that there was no limit (just in case my site had more hits then Microsoft(C)! I think there is a thing that makes us prefer no limits then limits.

I mean, granted I know 2GB of bandwidth is more then enough, but would you rather not like "unlimited".

Don't worry, I don't and never will/had gone for these plans, but they were always there, and I like the idea of them.

What happend to the turkey (Einstein)? Did thanks giving come early?

So you are completely missing the point. There is nothing wrong with wanting unlimited badnwdith. and nothing worng with wanting to beat microsoft . . There is something wrong with comanies that claim they offer unlimited Bandwdith and don't really follow through and end up offering the same amount of badnwidth as someone with limited plan. It called false advertisment and I don't know why it is not illegal. I can tell you from experience that burlee can only take 10 GB until they kick you out. That's unlimited for you

DrChaos: True, very True.

sharkman: That is the point I am trying to see. DO hosts live up to there expectations.

Under the votes, two people said their hosts was excellent. I want to hear from them, and I hope they are reading this...

TELL ME, TELL ME MORE!
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Have you emailed burlee informing them that false advertisment is illegal? ;)

Regards.

Well, I had first hand experience with these so called "unlimited plans" with hostonce. Just to start things off they were so horrible I quit within the first 2 months. But anyways... I knew that their unlimited plan for $5 was too good to be ctrue, but i wanted to be a cheap ass and this is what i got. a 40 gig shared server with a ton of other sites, which actually narrowed down to about 35 megs per site. so i told them when i quit: I HAVE MULTI, YOUR SERVERS ARE SLOW, AND YOU DON'T HAVE UPDATED VERSIONS OF YOUR LANGUAGES. :angry:Hell, they didnt even have the slightest bit of php support. So yea, Unlimited? More like... not... :D

They said that this hosts met their expectation, becasue their expectations were not that high on bandwidth. Let's be honest 10GB of bandwidth is enough, but any 14.95/month hosting company can offer that unlimited service

Maybe a company can offer "UNLIMITED MONTHLY TRANSFER" to its customers by putting them on a capped line (i.e. 64kbit). It won't be "UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH", but since the line is capped, they don't check how much the user transfers in a month. But then again, it won't be "UNLIMITED" since it's capped and the user can not transfer more than 64kbit/s! I guess for this kind of deal, "UNMETERED MONTHLY TRANSFER" would be a better term.

Or maybe a company can offer "UNLIMITED TRANSFER" to their small account customers. For example, if the company has 100 customers on the 5-20MB webspace plan, they know that 99.9% of these don't go over 500MB transfer/month and therefore offer "UNLIMITED MONTHLY TRANSFER". Offcourse, there is always those that use a lot more than others, but that would even out if the company has many customers.

UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH - Currently impossible..
UNLIMITED TRANSFER - Maybe this could be done somehow..
UNMETERED TRANSFER - Probably the best term to use if you HAVE TO go down that road.

Well said. And that is the point. I use to advertise unlimited space until I started to feel ashamed of myself. I knew with a certainty that I would never really have to provide infinite room - the average size of webs at that time was 1Mb!

And even more tempting is to advertise your pipe size - not how much bandwidth your are contracting for. You know the story; "4 OC3, redundant this and that, blah blah". Bandwidth still costs big money in big quantities and this gives hosting companies an incentive to exaggerate. There is no stopping it I suppose but I am glad that some of the voices on this forum seem to be saying DON'T LIE TO ME. The customers have to play some roll in the solution even if they are not the ones making the ridiculous claims. I'm just not sure what. rolleyes:

And please don't anybody mention one of those so called hosting "lists" where someone claims to pick the best of the best. I have not seen one of them worth a damn yet. Or maybe I am saying that because I am not on the list. :)

I am with a fairly decent host called: rackhost.net They tell you upfront how much space they can offer you, and how much bandwith too. they cost $10 (thats 5 more than hostonce), but i dont care because its a fair deal instead of just lying.
