View Full Version : What tools to investigate a host?

I'm looking at a host for a mailing list, and it appears to be an individual. While e-mail contact (support) has been outstanding, and everything looks great...I'm getting a sneaking suspicion that it's a guy running this off of his PC.

What tools are out there (traceroute, etc?) for investigating at least what the server's running on?

You may find http://www.NetCraft.com helpful with this one...

Deb,

Yeah...thanks...I just remembered Netcraft.

It shows:

The site www.(edited).com is running Apache/1.3.22 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) mod_ssl/2.8.5 OpenSSL/0.9.6 DAV/1.0.2 PHP/4.0.6 mod_perl/1.24_01 on Linux.

This host has been around since 1997, according to groups.google.com's search...but Netcraft shows that in 2000 and early 2001, they were running Apache on MacOS.

Should that concern me?

If you are:
1. Satisfied with the service
2. Satisfied with the uptime
3. Satisfied with the speed
4. Satisfied with the price

May be you don't have to :)

rey,

That's what I'm thinking...and with any host, there are no guarantees they'll be around next Wednesday...much less next year.

The person I've been corresponding with has been extremely helpful in setting up a test account for the mailing list. They've been around for a while, and they've created a web interface to majordomo...so all signs point to go....

It's just that with past experiences (namely Hosturbo :D), I'm a little leery.

Thanks to all for the help.

You might just post their URL, and see if anyone has had any experiences with them?
