I currently have the traditional type of freebsd virtual servers that cost around $165/month each, but which only provide around 1GB of space. I can host multiple domains on them, but I dont really have full root access.
As an example, see: http://www.2kweb.net/accounts/virtual/freebsd-virtual-servers/diamond/
These days, there are numerous companies that are offering Virtual Dedicated servers that offer much more in terms of space and options, but at half the cost of not less. I am not talking of the small players. Even large companies such as superb.net are offering pretty good deals on VDSs.
For example:

Am I missing something here, or am I losing something if I switch to a VDS system?
Thank you.
