View Full Version : Is it all worth it in the end?

Sorry for this post... just wanna get it off my chest.

I have been running dedicated servers for about 15 months now - went from knowing next to nothing, to know quite a bit.

I host about 15-20 (since about november - and it is word of mouth that people know about me as I am not 'live' yet) paying sites about about the same again in free sites and I love helping out customers if they have problems.

When everything is running smoothly and all is working out, Sod's Law comes along and messes it all up. If you check the Dedicated Server forum, you will see why.

My smooth running service is now as good as dead because the webhost hasn't paid their cpanel license for my server even though I have paid him on time as I always do.
Email is down, WHM is down, Cpanel is down. I am getting ICQ messages/IRC messages galore about it from angry people.
Quite rightly too.

Everytime there is a problem with the server, it is not my doing. Instead it is either
1) Webhost not paying CPanel license or NOC fees
3) Network outage

I am just so depressed and exhausted by this all that I am just considering pulling out of doing webhosting and just having a server for my own sites.

IS there gold at the end of a rainbow?

I know your feelings.
Sh*t happens.
From time to time it strucks as all.

But... didn't you go for a cheaper provider than the one you had before?

We have all been there... take it easy man, it gets better =]

We all get our fair share of problems.

Craig.

Words we live by in our own realm are....

There are no problems... Only Solutions....

Hold on for the ride and start seeking the solution. You'll find it :)

Luckily no emails were lost in this event... I also emailed them within a few minutes of getting the error to let them know there was a problem.

I guess I was in one of those moods last night - I am usually a happy person :)

dont worry :) something like that always has the effect of a knee to the groin. when youve worked so hard and to be reemed over by someone elses deliberate screwup is always a sickening feeling.

I've been in your shoes before. It really sucks when it is not your fault and everything goes down . Gazillion of e-mails that contain bitching and cancellation requests.

The best solution is to be honest. Just explain what happened - even if it was your fault, and pray that client's head is not made out of wood. Most of the people usually understand. :-)

The worst thing you can do is give up.

I agree in being honest with clients - on my revised site (that is due to go live soon) I even explain that I am not webhosting full time, but that doesn't mean I take days to answer questions.
Unless I am driving home from work, or sleeping, I tend to answer emails as soon as they come in.

My webhosting isn't aimed at making a career - more like a way of expanding my knowledge and breaking even. If I make money, excellent - if not, then its not a worry. I work full time :)
