View Full Version : Need A New Webhost
Jade-Leah 03-06-2002, 05:05 PM I'm looking for a new webhost for my site. I am currently using the paid service with Angelfire, but have been having real problems with them. My site has been shut down over 140 times in 14 days due to excessive use of bandwidth - even though according to my account stats it hasn't gone over, and they do not reply to e-mails. Anyway, basically I need a site with a fair bit of bandwidth, around 10-15 GB (I think) It's a fan-site and generates a lot of traffic - when it's working  And I need around 100 MB of space. I'm not looking for anything complicated, I don't use FTP, PERL (whatever the hell that is!) or anything remotely complicated lol! I'm quite comfortable with Angelfire's simplicity. I have looked in this forum at various hosts, but have no idea which to choose.
Can anyone help......please?!
kmb999 03-06-2002, 05:13 PM It would help if you would clarify your budget. ;)
Jade-Leah 03-06-2002, 05:23 PM :o Oh yeah...knew I'd forget something! Somewhere around $15 a month, up to around $20.
Perfecthost 03-06-2002, 05:53 PM Hi-
Just a quick question that needs to be asked. Are those audios/videos copyrighted?
Jade-Leah 03-06-2002, 05:59 PM Not that I am aware of. They are not taken directly off any albums or videos. They are from performances off TV or radio interviews, that sort of thing.
avara 03-06-2002, 06:13 PM What's your budget? If you're on a small budget, but yet need lots of bandwidth, I think Tera-Byte should suit your needs quite well.

Technically, you probably don't have the rights to rebroadcast these clips, so you're going to have a hard time finding a host.
AcuNett 03-06-2002, 08:18 PM FTP isn't "remotely complicated" and many hosts only have FTP as a means of upload. Although we are working on a file manager, I doubt it will ever be used

and they have a copyright. Plus someone may want to get paid.
If the band I manage is one of them, cut me a check!

Well, in my defence, I'm not doing anything different than that of any of the other fan websites for the same person/group as I am. In fact, By not putting songs off CD's and Videos on the site, I have less than a lot of them, and I have been careful not to put what I considered copyright material on there.
If I ever did receive any official complaints, then I would, of course, take the offending item(s) down. I can see that maybe I don't technically have the rights to these things, as it wasn't me personally who recorded them, etc, but as I said, these are not audios/videos that are on sale for the public, just "tidbits" of things.
Chicken 03-07-2002, 10:00 AM Some 'tidbits' as you call them :D are legal. I don't even think you need permission for some clips (though you'd want to check on that to be sure). Not that it will help your bandwidth problem (heh), but you can serve portions of songs (something like 30 seconds-ish, again check to be sure).
I found this helpful when searching for a band (a song really) that I liked. Fan site had a 30 sec sample and it helped me figure out that I wanted this album (darn radio people talk so fast I barely heard the band name, plus my memory fades after 3 seconds).
Anyhwoo, I suppose this is all secondary, though related to your hosting request.

I meant no offence in asking about the copyrights.:) This is just something that webhosts need to know.
Good luck,
Lamar

No offence taken! ;)
Believe it or not, Angelfire has actually redeemed themselves for me. When I checked into my account information, I found that I had not, at any time, gone over my bandwidth limits. I wrote and told them this, and a few letters later after telling them I was dissatisfied with their service etc, and I was going to take my site and money elsewhere...... they upped my bandwidth and space. So, after all, for the time being, I'm staying where I am.
Thank you to all who offered advice though, and I have kept all the links to the webhosts that caught my attention for future reference if Angelfire messes up again.
