View Full Version : mchost v datahosts
fergal 03-06-2002, 10:55 AM Im interested in hearing from any datahosts resellers, how they find service and support? i have been saved at last minute from donhost thanks to this great site and have narrowed down my choice to either mchost or datahosts.net,on paper datahosts offer the best value, double web space and almost double bandwith(for $35) only thing makes me a little concerned is their dedicated servers(at a later date) are not fully managed so i presume this means they expect you to have some technical knowledge of servers etc, which may be a problem, any first hand experiences of datahosts is most welcome,im based in UK but most schemes here give you very little bandwith

nocturnix123 03-06-2002, 01:45 PM Im trying to decide too, im leaning more towards McHost for a number of reasons,
1. alot of datahost's features that SHOULD be unlimited do NOT say unlimited next to them, wich makes me wonder if they charge extra after going over a certain limit.
2. Their reseller packages arent laid out very well, im not sure exactly what theyre giving me. McHost's site is very easy to read and i know exactly what im getting.
3. McHost is one of the most popular reseller hosts from what i can tell, and thats generally a good thing.
4. I dont see WebhostManager on Datahosts, i think thats a must, especialy for us beginners!
Anyways, only thing that datahost's has over McHost is bandwidth. Other then that i think im gonna go with McHost.
4solutions 03-06-2002, 02:07 PM Well, as long as I stumbled in here by accident...
You might want to checkout this thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38128 In there, WCSWEB posts that he likes Datahosts.
Personally, I just signed up with www.Splashhost.com and the support has been great. The servers are very fast. But to be fair, I've only been there a week so I can't speak to reliability.
I've also heard that www.Voxtreme.com is pretty good, too.
Just my $0.02 as long as I'm here :D
Best of luck,
Keith
kmb999 03-06-2002, 04:49 PM DataHosts uses Plesk, not WHM, which is a litter harder to use for beginners. DH is very realistic about unlimited. I don't think they offer unlimited anything. However, when you want more MySQL DBs, for example, they will give you a large amount more (Ie. 30+) for free.
My personal favorites are http://www.intenseinfo.com/ and http://www.integrahosting.net/.

Good. Very healthy. :D
WCSWEB 03-07-2002, 01:30 PM I don't understand why people say that plesk is harder than whm I really don't. Plesk is cleaner, easier, and it has a better presentation than whm also plesk is not BETA whm is ALWAYS filled with BUGS I don't think that I will want to expose my clients to a control panel filled with bugs in a production envinronment. Plesk is only 1 control panel whm is 2 control panel whm and cpanel I have used both and I will go with plesk anytime but thats another discussion.
With regards to datahosts.net yes they do have plesk before they had whm and now are using strictly plesk :) which to me is the right choice. Yes on their reseller plan they do have unlimited features like pop accounts, fowarders, mailinglist, etc..etc..... your msql databases are set to a verry high amount if you need more databases just send an e-mail to support and they will give you more databases no questions ask. Their support team is extremely knowledgeable and understanding they are extremely helpfull they make me feel right at home :D I was asking the same question about how their plans are layout and they told me that they are going to relaunch their site soon.
If you need further info I can try to help you just pm or e-mail me.
fergal 03-07-2002, 08:54 PM Im still looking at these two companies,i dont find datahosts response times anything special.
ive emailed them three times to find server specs for $35 reseller scheme without any luck and its not exactly clear what you get for your $35,mchost site is well laid out and clear although not best value for money you do get the feeling support will be good
Datahosts.net is very tempting but i would have liked to have seen more posts from their resellers here, good or bad before commiting myself

Filia 03-08-2002, 12:27 AM I just barely got a reseller with them. xD I don't even know if I set up the DNS correctly, and i won't find out until tomorrow when things should resolve. But, they seam pretty fair.
fergal 03-08-2002, 11:36 AM hi u said "fair" what exactly you mean when you say they are fair
also do you mean " barely" got an account with them timewise or did you have trouble with them? how are u finding tech support/email,so far very hit and miss with them (personally)
donhost with own nameservers is £50 montly(yike $75) so along with bad comments on them is only a very very last resort,i wanna make a decision by monday

Filia 03-08-2002, 12:28 PM Well, I like them.
See, I am very new to this reseller stuff. I knew really nothing about DNS and nameservers really, because I've always had a webhost manage that stuff for me.
Because I was such a newbie, and I still am rather, but not as bad as I was a few days ago, I have a few suggestions that pawned out of headaches. I wish that they would have had more information for "newbie resellers" - information about DNS. I However, everything has looked like it has worked out find, for the most part.
I am still getting use to the control panel, and I still have much to learn. I still don't know how to set up a subdomain nor how to stack domains and create domain pointers. Hopefully, I can figure this out, but they aren't needed.
Their support is rather fair, but you really have to poke and prod to get full answers that you want. I guess that most web hosting companies expect that resellers are fully expirenced in this stuff. I don't really plan on reselling any space. I purchased a web seller because I have so many domains and I need so much space.
I recommend them, just don't forget to be patient.
fergal 03-08-2002, 01:34 PM well thats confirmed my fears about datahosts
They are taking too long to reply to emails which is not good for a reseller and more importantly his/her clients, worse still is when they do eventually reply some of their answers are a bit vague to say the least forcing yet more emails(one eg.im referring to case server specs for $35 reseller scheme)i guess on the face of it datahosts is not really suited for the beginner at all, they seem to assume you have most of the technical knowledge to run a hosting company, its a big shame as theres a lot to like about them, although their website is poor in regards to reseller info.
someone mentioned voxtreme a while ago, i think ill check em out,my mate has an account with donhost and has never had any problems, hes just upgraded to dedicated server a few months ago and finds support, email and phone very good and fast, hes in UK as well so that may account for it

My thoughts exactly. I just signed with MCHost today for this exact reason. Too bad, of the top 4 companies I was looking at, Datahosts had the most storage and data transfer for the price. In the end, I think I signed up with the most expensive of the 4, but the support seems to be the best. Oh well, those extra dollars will be passed along to my customers anyhow.
For the record, the top 4 in the list were:
Datahosts - Most for the money and located in the U.S., but no answers to presales emails and I understand it can (and does) take 48+ hours for initial account setup. After I spend weeks researching these companies I don't wish to wait any longer after I make a decision. They also need to do some serious work on their web site.
Splashhost - No decision would be complete with considering splashhost. In the end, it was between Splash and MC. Splash offers very slightly more for the dollar. Nice site, excellent support. To be honest, it was so close between MCHost and Splashhost that I chose MC simply because they are located in North America and some of their servers are in Atlanta (my home!). I almost feel guilty for using this to decide, but these two hosts are both so great that I needed something to break the tie.
MCHost - See above... I wish they would include just a tad more bandwidth. Excellent, clear, understandable web site. Good support forums. Not many complaints. Lot's of recommendations. Very strange pricing on their plans (figure out how much you're being charged for data transfer as you move up in the plans. It's not always cheaper (per GB) to buy more. That's unusual. Seems there is some randomness to the pricing; It's not following a strict formula. But, still, it's fair). They've got my business...
Voxtreme - These guys were a late entry into my list so they probably didn't get a fair evaluation. Seems that their plans fall somewhere between MCHost and DataHosts for pricing per GB (BW and storage). 30-day money back guarantee. That's good. Very few posts in their forums. I use a hosts forums to help determine how their current customers are feeling about them. Just couldn't seem to find enough good/bad about Voxtreme quick enough.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...
