View Full Version : am i a dummy for using register.com?
bully28 03-06-2002, 04:14 AM i pay 35 a year for 10 domain renewals... while i've tried to use my current host to transfer the registrar, they are unhelpful. can anyone tell me where i should go to move my registration to a more reasonable place or should i stay put?
sorry for the dum question. i guess i AM a dummy sometimes ;)
hostjet 03-06-2002, 04:28 AM definitely move, there are a lot better places out there which charge less than a third of that price and offer better service.
diederik 03-06-2002, 04:37 AM Yeah, move away from register.com :)
Their are a lot of good registrars like stargate inc, godaddy, dotster, etc.
And much, much cheaper :)

am i a dummy for using register.com?No ... but I wouldn't say that you'd have both oars in the water either.
Seriously, I used register.com and they were very good. But directNIC is better (they're great!) and they only cost $15 per year, versus $35 for register.com.
Not to mention a slew of other registrars with prices anywhere from about $8 to $15.
register.com? I don't think so.
serve-you 03-06-2002, 12:38 PM Keep in mind, price is not everything. If the level of service is important to you, don't just go running to the cheapest registrar. Also, look out for cheap registrars that charge you for transfers. With 10 domains to transfer, you could be looking at paying well over $100 in transfer fees from some registrars, that people here will recommend you.

I moved all my domains from Register.com to Directnic.com ($15/yr). I highly recommend that you do the same. Directnic has been the best registrar that I've ever used, and it also happens to be inexpensive.

I also hear good things about dotster and enom, but I've never actually used those myself.

Keep in mind, price is not everything. Yeah, I've got to agree - service is the main consideration. I mentioned in an earlier post that there are lots of low-cost registrars, but make sure you check out the registrar carefully before going with them.
The best I've found so far - directNIC.
Incognito 03-06-2002, 02:10 PM I know how it happens....with one or two domains you don't really mind the extra per year. However, it becomes 3...then 4....then 10...don't even want to admit how many I have...why do we like domains so much....
I would gradually switch them if I was you. At least go to a moderately priced alternative...you can go as low as $8.95 or so on this quantity, but I would at least find someone under $15 each. Or just set yourself up under Dotster as a reseller (is free) and get them for $12 each per year.
You can either transfer now and add a year to each, or just wait and transfer maybe 60 days before they expire. Just make sure you don't wait too long, as if you do, you run the risk of the transfer not being made before expiration and having to renew with your current registrar.
thewitt 03-06-2002, 08:13 PM I would echo the advice to move your domains before you are close to the expiration date. It's not uncommon to have transfer problems with some registrars that can take many weeks to resolve.
You are paying too much, but be careful you don't go to the other extreme and get stuck with hidden charged or no service.
