View Full Version : How to profit from your sites traffic?
nocturnix123 03-05-2002, 08:26 PM Im just curious, im new to this idea really. Of course im kind of ahead of myself, my site hasnt been released yet, but I do have a POTENTIAL of 10,000+ active users (college related site). Hopefully I will be established enough to have close to that amount someday, but thats only a dream at this point.
Can anyone give me information on how to turn traffic into $$? Im thinking banner ads, but I dont really know how this works at all. This site wont really have any other way of making money (although i have a few ideas).
How much can high traffic sites make in ad revenues?
How do I find hi-paying advertisers?
Is there some kind of site, or forum related to this information?
Any other info would be nice. ;)

puggy106 03-05-2002, 08:32 PM It really depends on who is going to be viewing your site. You say its a collge site:
College = Students
Students = No money
That really rules out selling products on the, such as WHT members advertising their hosting companys/services.
Banner advertising like you say would be the best bet, im sure that some guys around here will know some good ones, off the top of my head i can think of a few.
http://www.cj.com
http://www.dkads.com - think hes on this board too!
http://www.freewebspace.net/forums - look under ad revenue:)
Hope this helps

nocturnix123 03-05-2002, 08:41 PM yah believe me, being a college student myself, i can totaly agree with you on the lack of money part. I had to have my ex-girlfriend send me quarters to do my laundry! Talk about hitting rock-bottom, i had to go commando for a week!
anyways, I still think a site with tons of college students visiting it would be a great targeted demographic, regardless if they have money or not. Maybe some acidemic related products? Book resale sites!!? Although I was considering setting up a local book resale section, so that may be ruled out too.
If i thought of some stuff that would be good to have advertised on my site, would I just contact the company? What is the going rate of advertising space on a busy site? I dont know about any of this stuff heehh.
puggy106 03-05-2002, 08:43 PM The price would depend on the number of hits your getting:)
Number of visitors sorry!
Chris
Skeptical 03-05-2002, 09:07 PM But actually, I see young people buying lots more stuff than old people. The older you get the cheaper you become I think. And young people like to stay hip and trendy and buy on impulses.
With that said I think people between 23-35 buy the most.
richy 03-05-2002, 09:44 PM umm students? no money??
theres these things, they call em jobs :) im in my last year of uni, i havent grossed under 8K pa GBP in any year yet and the 8k is gonna be this year when ive given myself plenty of time off work to study and concentrate on getting a company running. the only students that are truly broke are the ones that dont work. first year i made 20 k and last year about 12 k. not much but remember thats gotta be multiplied by 1.45 to get USD and thats 100% tax free. cost of living is next to nowt. were just poor in comparrison to people who are settled into nice full time jobs.
as for impulse boy do i know that. laptops and shiny toys. and when drunk thats worse, with credit cards. waking up with a palm 3c, a camcorder etc, a washburn, a fender strat.
but i wouldnt say UK students are poor. some r they r just lazy. theres plenty of hours in the day to fit in work and uni.
nocturnix123 03-05-2002, 10:48 PM Well congradulations then, im very happy for you. As for me, all on campus jobs pay minimum wage, wich is really low where i live (5.15), you cant make even decent money working part time and going to school up here. The only decent job is telemarketing wich not only sucks, but its also off campus. I may be doing that, but I'd have to walk to work everyday wouch would be a pain. That job pays 7$ an hour, so even then id be making approx 140$ a week wich is enough to cover my beer money :beer: , laundry and thats pretty much it. Believe me no one up here that goes to school full time makes anything close to what youre making, obviously you got lucky with a really sweet job, or youre full of it.
Anyways this is off the topic of my post, so Im done talking about how poor college students are.
richy 03-05-2002, 11:37 PM heh no i aint fulla it, i just manage a few jobs at once in the summer and keep on a technical job thru term time. on top of that we get 3.5k of loan a year from the govt and have no tuitions fees. main job has been in a puter shop and the wages aint bad. grunt work in the summer has been anything thats going from fish n chip shops to fruit n veg shops. plenty of work going and decent wages. minimum of about 4 an hour but averaging closer to 6. only 15 hours a week in uni.lifes pretty sweet. i guess its harder going in the us. sorry for you folks. lol and yes i still cry poverty to the rents from time to time. oh and i aint on campus, its an inner city uni :) that prolly explains it.
but back to your subject, advertising.not too much experience on that but theres gotta be plenty of stuff to target at students. maybe local companies would be interested? companies offering services to students, like joes flame and frill or a local bar or something like that. you got an audience thats fairly specific and it aint such a bad thing, just have a think about who would want to advertise to it. maybe you could throw in designing the banner adds as well. make it totally hands off for the companies , that would help the technophobes. maybe offer a free trial. if ya have any aim \ icq style things drop me a pm if you want a chat :)
best wishes
nocturnix123 03-06-2002, 12:17 AM I think local would be one of my best options, im sure bars would love to have their banners up there, they could have drink specials and all sorts of promotions in their banner. Would even be a valuable thing for the students too.
But what would i charge them? Ive been researching advertising network sites and stuff, and I was actualy very suprised how little you make off ads heheh, i was expecting alot more. Big sites get like 100$ a month through the click networks or impression ad networks, that seems really low considering what the advertiser is getting for their money. like 10cents per 1,000 page views? That sounds like very little money, maybe its just me heehh. Like i said im new to all this. Can you actualy make GOOD money off of advertisments? I mean how do those sites that dont charge for their services do so well? :erm:
richy 03-06-2002, 12:26 AM yeah you dont make much on the general untargetted adding. luckily your target audience is well defined. so target places that want students. music shops, bars, laundries, bars, food places etc.
do a leaflet drop for an all in service. maybe get a two way deal going with the campus radio station. they get x adverts for pluggin your site. id offer a few select companies a free trial. maybe they even get to keep the banners. what do they have to loose. let them promote one event and see what the response is.
how much is always going to be tricky. its how much its going to be worth to them, how much the market can stand. remember anything is better then nothing :) make it a set fee maybe rather than per click or per view. so they know how much they are going to spend. find out how much the radio station charges or whereever and undercut :)
