Darn. I thought these ones would remain free. (I'm going to get some "I told you so" on this).

And you thought so because "the Internet is free" or why exactly?

No, seriously though...I did think they would remain free. There's been a bit of talk about it over the last 12 months, and especially when Feb 23rd passed (which was the 12 month mark for a few .kg domains I had registered) and there had been no sign of a charge being introduced, I was fairly certain they'd stay that way. A little naive in hindsight.

So what were they doing to pay the bills? I never did check them out, as the domain names were just not interesting to me.

I assumed the DNS traffic was no big deal to them, and that if they were selling enough 2nd level domains it would have been sustainable. But yeah, for whatever reason I thought they'd have kept it free.

i am sure their plan from day one was to charge people down the track.

I thought theyd stay free too. Because they did sell .kg for $50, I thought the .com.kg thing was a marketing tool. Also, I wouldnt expect dns traffic to be much of a strain anyways.

I think this was a great strategic move on their part though, waiting for peopel to have the domains established and all :D

You have to believe that people would pay $50 for a .kg domain, and not just that they are offered for $50 though...

This model is interesting, however it does not build a loyal customer base. It's the same game that NameZero played - give away domains to bring in the business, then convert or transfer for $20 a domain. You'll lose some customers in the process, and some will just go along because they don't know any better, but in the process, you'll build no customer loyalty - and that's where your future lies.

Yep, seen/heard it all before. This was just one I *thought* was going to be a bit different. Big mistake? Not really. We don't have any mission critical .com.kg domains. Just handy ones. No big deal.

The same sort of situation applies down here. Our .com.au domains are $140.00 per years. There are tens of thousands of them. The local domain authority would easily be able to maintain a free personal domain system. There are some free fourth level domains available in the *.id.au namespace, but they're not very attractive by the time you stick your own name in front of the third level.
