View Full Version : Auto-ads
djbob 03-21-2005, 12:54 AM How do I make it so ads automatically appear on all of my hosted sites? I am a hosting reseller, but I actually give away free hosting. I would like to be able to place ads on the free hosting I give away, but I do not have root access, so I understand I can't install any Apache modules to do the job. Any ideas?
I would like it to be fully automated please, at least so that the customer doesn't have to add any HTML etc. on his/her website.
Thanks,
djbob
Adding automatic ads is not possible on a reseller account, it requires root access so you can modify the PHP configuration (I believe you need some mod?). Besides that, your host won't be too happy about you giving away free hosting.
ScionStatic(Stevo) 03-21-2005, 02:06 AM I am in need of that too, but ive found no hope. You need a dedicated. So looks like im going to have to ask them too..or ad them myself :dgrin:
djbob 03-21-2005, 07:36 PM To Lev: Well, the hosting that will have ads is a free hosting give-away... you know, for free? If you pay, you won't have ads... Thanks anyways.
To EH-Stevo: Hmmm... well, I definetely don't have the money for a dedicated. Not even enough for a $50 monthly value dedicated server.
I know that it is possible to use a header file and auto-stick that onto all my clients' accounts through the cpanel3-skel folder, but that will still require a little bit of HTML addition, however small.
Well, any other ideas? Maybe through CPanel or WHM... you know, a mod for CPanel to manage FTP and add a header to every HTML page it recieves? That might be a prob. w/ PHP, Perl, etc. though.
Thanks,
djbob
djbob 03-22-2005, 07:25 PM [bump]
please guys, are there ANY solutions? if there is such a site, could someone send me to a cpanel/whm modifications site? that would help a lot! thanks!
Shaw Networks 03-22-2005, 11:00 PM Watch out, the WHT mods don't like bump posts, but you'll want to check out something called "mod_layout". You can use that mod to force the code you choose to the top of every web page you host.
djbob 03-23-2005, 07:57 PM does this mod_layout place ads on EACH site? can i choose for it to NOT have ads on some sites?
IncognitoNetworks, he has no root, how can he install mod_layout? This is what I was refering to in my first post here.
Also djbob, I meant that your hosting company will not be happy about you using their servers to give out free hosting. Free hosting tends to attract people looking to abuse the server and you don't even have any information to "punish them". Many companies have it in their Terms of Service that resellers may not give out free hosting.
djbob 03-24-2005, 12:53 AM Yes, i researched some on this, and I found it was an apache module. NOT what i need.
Thanks for the info Lev, i will check my company's ToS!
EDIT
checked teh ToS, free hosting = allowed.
so uhm, any ideas anyone? And if possible, I would like the following info:
- Does mod_layout have a feature where its ONLY applied to some specified sites? I know it has a feature where its NOT applied to some sites, but I want it the other way around.
- If the above answer is no, is there any kind of Apache mod that has that feature?
My hosters said that they can install a mod for me if its an alright one. But this is gonna be really hard, since i'm prob. gonna have to organize in two folders, and i dont think WHM supports that. speaking of which...
- Does WHM support placing different packages in different directories?
I'm gonna go see if it can do that now...
dollar 03-24-2005, 03:07 AM Well to answer a few questions.
1. there is no way to automatically place ads on a reseller account unless some plugin is developed for it. You are using CPanel so I can't be any help there as far as plugin creation goes.
2. Yes you can choose which sites mod_layout is applied to by only having the proper lines in the virtual hosts of the sites you want ads placed on.
3. Even if your host was to install mod_layout for you, you need the custom lines added to the virtual hosts for those users. I am not a CPanel guru, so I am not sure how this would b eaccomplished.
djbob 03-24-2005, 08:03 PM what do you mean by "virtual host"? do you mean VPS? or do you mean like the reseller.

He means niether of those.
Just to put it simply: this cannot be done automatically with a reseller account. You will need a VPS w/ root or a dedicated server. You can manually put the header on, but with shared/reseller hosting you have a lot of limitations. You may want to look at getting a VPS in the $30-50 range.
djbob 03-25-2005, 08:02 PM that doesnt answer my questions...

SORRY! :(

What's the difference? Just have it NOT apply to the paid customers.
- Does WHM support placing different packages in different directories?
That doesn't make much sense, but if I am understanding that right, I believe no would be the answer.

No disrespect meant by this, but google can answer most all of these, and those which google can not answer common-thought can.
You choose which sites you want mod_layout applied to. You choose. There is no magic system built in to say "all sites that have domain names less than 5 characters do not have ads". If you want that write a script for it.
Second question does not need answered.
For the WHM question somebody who uses it will have to answer, I wouldn't touch CPanel with a 10 foot poll.

Well, the difference is that my host is gonna install it for me, and its gonna be a pain to make it NOT applied to everybody but me.
And thanks for the other answer!!

i did google it! seriously, i did!
and for the choose what sites, all im asking is does it have a feature where you choose which sites get the header, instead of choosing which sites DON'T get the header. because, as i said earlier, my host is gonna install this for me, and it'll be a pain for them to have to remove the header from EVERY single site except for a few of mine.
hmmm, this doesnt seem like a sensible solution. It would only work if i could make it ONLY apply to a specialy directory, and i could make Cpanel create a special package in a different directory. i dont think either of those are possible.
ichris 03-27-2005, 09:54 PM I was in the exact same situation, and I eventually decided putting a .htaccess file to prepend the ad in the cpanel skeleton factory. Worked like a charm! :D

Do you care to tell others how you went upon doing this?
