View Full Version : Ensim Webppliance
DavidU 03-05-2002, 01:24 AM Hi all,
I was wondering if Ensim's Webppliance works with RedHat 7.2
Their website says it's only certified with 7.1 -- is their that big of a difference? are people doing it?
I *REALLY* can't run 7.1 -- too many issues.

Really? Why -- I've been reading the old threads and it seems the most well respected.
I run a non-profit colocation facility and Ensim has been kind enough to offer us a license (we are a *real* non-profit) for use.
What are your issues with them, you don't really say anything worthwhile.

I've had very bad experiences with Ensim - thats just it. I like to do things via CLI if I want, and many times I choose to do that. However, the second you do that with ensim, it craps out and messes up. Since ensim is a quazi-os it takes control over many of the OS's functionality. I understand that this might be great for many people - but I just don't perfer it. Instead, I like interfaces like Cpanel or Webmin, where you can do things via CLI and not have it screw up (unless you do something, then its your fault).
Mostly, I'd say just one very bad week of hell trying to resolve things with ensim.
But if you are a non-profit, and all you can get is Ensim, then I will say that it is still a decent product and will get the job done, as long as you don't like to tweak a lot of things.
DavidU 03-05-2002, 01:42 AM First of all -- do you mean CLI? (Command Line Interface?)
Secondly, we are all a bunch of hackers but we need some "dead-simple" vhost servers for a bunch of non-profits who don't need their own dedicated.

Like what??? Please expand -- don't just toss out things like "I hate monkeys" or "Tacos are bad" -- they are pointless without backup.

Ahh, ok. Thank you. But...
the question is... Does it run on RedHat 7.2?
thanks,
davidu
lol...
yes, CLI - post above will be edited ... been a long day :D
Well, I went to replace bind9 w/ bind8 because I really don't like the bind9 syntax - that screwed everything over.

We have been using it for a long time. We love it. Sure it has some pain in the a** things, but which CP doesn't. I highly recommend it.
I have seen this question asked a lot about 7.2. I know some have done it. However I would not suggest it. I would try the Ensim forums to find out who succeeded-

remarkable 03-05-2002, 03:48 AM Ignore the posts by xnet, they are all really not related to your question.
WEBppliance is perfect for you if you need a simple easy to use control panel that you can install and forget about it.
Remember that WEBppliance is an "Appliance", hence the name. There are some people that have had bad experiences with WEBppliance by trying to replace the bind server or something else half brained. Ignore them. WEBppliance is just what the name sounds like. It is a Web Hosting Appliance.
Install WEBppliance on 7.1 with updated services, kernel and then patch WEBppliance to the current level. As long as you don't try to modify the appliance then you will be just fine.

CobaltConn 03-05-2002, 05:39 PM I love ensim :)
RH Robert 03-06-2002, 03:20 AM We have been using Ensim for a couple of years now and have found it to be good for what it is. Sure it doesn't have all the features we would like, but nothing does. We use cpanel also and not to irritate all the cpanel fans, but those friggin updates cause more issues than they solve. Ensim 3.0 does run on RH 7.2 with some major edits, but it will no longer be supported by Ensim if you do this. As Remarkable said, stick with 7.1 and apply the patches. Go to ensims forums and you will see posts about 7.2 installations and the people who MAY help you do this.
