View Full Version : Msn Search.. Wow!
ilyash 03-12-2005, 11:45 PM check it out:
http://search.msn.com
This is the ugliest thing I have ever seen come out of msft.
When you click "images" the whole layout suddenly changes and they say
Didn't get the results you expected? Help us improve.
Thats sad. I didnt even search!
It is so easy to check for that, these programmers are so damn lazy.
Now try to search for something..
heres an example:
http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=web+hosting+talk&FORM=QBRE
Do you see the ads at the side?
Do they remind you of the google ads?
this looks like a sick rip-off of google.
They tried to make their design "google-like" by using simplicity, but they made it look like crap.
Image search uses google style also..
like..
---------
pic / discription
---------
orig webpage
however the frames have messed up sizes, where the top frame is waaaaay tooo big.
Opinions? Comments?
EDIT: look at this page..
http://search.msn.com/settings.aspx?ru=%2f%3fsetlang%3den-US%26FORM%3dLTHP&FORM=SEHP
does it remind you of http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en
?
Kamejoko 03-13-2005, 12:02 AM You can't expect 2 sites that have exactly the same functionality to be completely different.
No matter how it looks like, I like it very much. Not that I am using it, but MSN search has brought me a lot of visitors since it was launched.
i like it more than google. it has done a much better job of crawling my websites, and the markup is a hell of alot better than that of google.

Does yahoo/Askjeeves/dogpile look like google??
I think not!
It might have brought visitors, I am not saying they should close..
I am trying to point out an almost blatant rip, and that they should have hired better programmers/designers.
Tyler 03-13-2005, 12:27 AM If you are looking for a Google rip design check out Become (become.com). But I also like MSN, and would have to agree with Mikey. It does bring me a lot more members in, and the simplicty. Maybe I have the ads blocked (good chance), but where are they?
And from day 1 of the Beta they said they was going to do ads.

Atlantis Services 03-13-2005, 12:49 AM http://toolbar.msn.com/desktop/results.aspx?FORM=PCRE&q=web%20hosting%20talk
Desktop search, just like google *rolls eyes*
There can be only one and the chose is clear... Google.com ;)
YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE...
=)
=)
*runs off*
Actually, most search engines looks very similar, also, you really look like a google fanboy, and I never even heard of such a thing :P
freak 03-13-2005, 06:33 AM Heck, by bringing in more visitors, it means it is easier to trick with simple SEO, which means while I do like it for bringing in new visitors, I am not going to use it myslef...

Well yahoo owned google so it was my fault for using that as an example.. but you get the idea.
Afaik, yahoo uses google search technology? I could be wrong though.
Kamejoko 03-14-2005, 02:30 AM Yahoo is one of Google's sponsors when Google started up. But they don't own Google in any way.
They used to use Google's search result, but they started their own over 1 year ago.
Look at http://www.altavista.com, http://www.alltheweb.com (OK they are owned by Yahoo, but the interfaces were like this, or similar to this, before they are owned by Yahoo, even before Google started). Even Dogpile has the same design philosophy, only some difference in graphics and a few more links.

I'm pretty certain Overture (now Yahoo! Search Marketing Solutions) was around well before Google started their Adwords program.
So one could say Google piggy-backed the idea off of them.
MSN currently uses Yahoo! for the display of their pay per click results, until they develop and deploy their own form of PPC advertising. Expect that sometime this year.
& has been mentioned above, MSN and Yahoo both now use their own algorithms for their organic free results.
openXS 03-15-2005, 01:34 AM I prefer MSN over google for several reasons. Google sucks lately!
dtdemon 03-17-2005, 06:49 PM haha, the thing that gets me is the desktop search.
Clearly the realm of some windows os programmers, but I guess msn decided to sneak it bye.
Tyler 03-17-2005, 07:09 PM I'll post the new news about MSN Search!
Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer unveiled on Wednesday the MSN adCenter, a new tool targeting the online advertising market.
Few weeks ago Microsoft released a search engine designed to compete with Google and Yahoo and a desktop search tool. The new tool completes the company’s search offering and should help to improve its competitive position in the Internet advertising, which generated $9.6 billion in revenue last year, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau.
Google and Yahoo dominate the online search market, which is by far the largest segment of the web advertising market, with the market shares of 35.1 and 31.8 percent respectively. Microsoft is a distant third, with just 16 percent.
The MSN adCenter will allow advertisers to buy combinations of keywords and target audience using personal data of registered users. "We're really giving advertisers a better opportunity to connect with their audience," said MSN product manager Karen Redetzki.
According to Microsoft, the new tool will be tested first in France and Singapore for six months, and then rolled out in the United States. Microsoft said it would keep using Overture Services provided by Yahoo for its search ad sales until the contract expiration in 2006.
Abvex 03-17-2005, 10:04 PM *yawn* you guys need to watch this video before chatting away. :stickout:

heh, so what msn search look alike? does it bite you or something? yeah of course ms can do better but I don't bother myself comparing search engines websites.
I don't like a lot of ms products then again I do like a lot of their products. I am getting sick and tired of people just jumping to conclusions and pointing at ms at EVERY LITTLE THING THEY DO!
MS can do better, yahoo can do better and Google can do better. I fear this is a google-fanboy generation.
