View Full Version : Difference between RAQ and, umm, Linux

I'm seeing all kinds of wonderful hosting offers. Basically get an up to date server running Linux for the same price we pay for our ol' Cobalt RAQ3

It makes me wonder how much different managing a Linux server is for someone who has only experience with a Cobalt RAQ3. Must admit that I've played with SSH sessions more then GUI stuff the last 5 or 6 months.

But after a year of managing the RAQ, I still consider myself to be a newbie when it comes to Linux.

So, how much difference is there?

For one using the GUI: Huge

For one using only SSH: Minimal

Thanks jks,

I'm guessing your answer is so right on the target that no one felt the need to try and do any better.

It's cool though, lol

Thanks :)

Which are better Apples or Oranges?

You cannot say if you do not define some criteria for making a choice.

I'm just planning to host my main website and maybe some friends, but no acutally reselling. I don't need much webspace, maybe 2 gigs, just basically need bandwidth.

A base model Raq4 with a, 10gb drive and 256mb ram should handle that easy.

So a Raq4i would be a better choice than a AMD Linux?

Not for me, but maybe for you :D

Get the Cobalt if you really like it's control panel - go to cobalt.com and give the demo a try.

Get an AMD or Intel Redhat box if you don't like the Cobalt control panel and prefer Plesk, Ensim, or another control panel, or since you're not reselling, if you just want to manage the server directly with something like Webmin (Free).

Since it sound slike you will be a long way from maxing out the CPU power, then either will work fine for you. I don't really like the Cobalt GUI and I do want to run a lot of dynamic content, so I would go for a faster AMD/Intel RH server for the same price.

Anyone use Cobalt control panel, or Ensim have any likes or dislikes? or any problems with either?

If your main questions revolve around the cp, then you might want to head on down to the Hosting Software and Control Panel Forum and have a look around or search for relevant topics (the subject has been discussed before).
