not free, but Macromedia Fireworks is excellent for image compression - possiby the best I've ever used. Comes with some image manipulation add-on too *grin* I only ever use it as an image cruncher.

Gimp is the best I have seen so far... :)

It is better than Fireworks.. (though I do like Fireworks a lot)...

Also, there is a win version of Gimp...
