Hi,
I am wondering how knowledgeable you have to be in hosting/servers and such, to be a reseller.

Thanks

It's like the same as being a regular web host. You can be not very knowledgable, but customers won't like that, and you won't know how to do certain things because you haven't done it before. Or.. you can be knowledgable and impress everybody.

Generally, being a reseller should be easier, since the host takes care of the system. You just have to add customers and support them. The adding process is usually (most of the time) done through a control panel which isn't that hard.

As a reseller?
Not a whole lot. If you know your way around the control panel well, and have a good understanding of how the net works, you should be covered for most things you're *able* to handle.

About the only thing to check up on I suppose would be MX and CNAME records. Beyond that most of the job should be poke and click.

For a lot of things you'll need root access which you won't have so those support needs will be addressed by your upstream host.

Having said that, it's well worth boning up on the craft regardless. Better to know what's happening than just hope for the best

you could get by with limited knowledge.....But I believe that if you want to be successful you should learn as much as you can, and keep learning everyday.......so that you can become an expert in the field..........

If you resell then your server is managed for you – covering the biggest % of any work required. Theoretically, if you then provide a decent and comprehensive support / knowledge base for your clients covering the every day issues that arise – that they are encouraged to ‘read’ before applying for support. Then the second largest % of your work is also covered.

I'm going to be a reseller soon and in my opinion, I think it would be best to know everything as you would to be a host on your own server since you are doing everything but working with the hardware and may get a server if all goes well :D

Right attitude :) The vast majority of hosts start our as resellers, gain a good reputation / client base and move on to there own servers - Good luck :)

Try to make a good FAQ and knowledge base, that way your customers can use that as a first port of call and obviously you must know the basics in order to supprt them. If you have any major problems your host should be able to sort them out for you.

For a new reseller I would definitely recommend a WHM/CPanel package.

It gives you the most control over your customers and gives your customers the most control over their accounts.
