I registered my name yesterday and they said the name wasn't taken and it registered to me with no problems. Later that day I did a whois search on my name and it came up with some company owning it. I sent the people I registered with an email about it and they said they'd look into it.
Well, anyway I did a search today and it comes up with a different company than the first one. Has this ever happened to anyone? Is there any way for me to find out the date and time the name was registered?

Thanks.

What was the date of the registration of the domain name?
It could have been registered before you did within the same time between dns database updates by Network Solutions. This has never happened to me, but it is very possible.

December 12th. The same day the name was "registered" to me. I've been thinking about my name and making sure it wasn't taken since Friday. Is it possible that someone registered the same name as me at the same exact time I did?

It doesn't have to be the same time, just within the time between database updates, usually every 12-24 hours. If the date is the same, the odds are they registered it first. it would still show available to you because the database was probably not updated from the time they registered it, to the time you did.

My dad suggested I don't name any names because I don't know for sure what happened but the people I registered the name with are the ones who show up in the whois as owning the name I tried to register.

Tell me that doesn't sound a little suspicious?

Domain name please, and registrar. Yes, that would raise my eyebrows just a bit!

I just got an email from them. They fixed everything and the domain is under my name. It was popartist.org the registrar is 000domains.com.

Everything is fine now and I commend them on their quick reaction time. Everything was fixed in 24 hours.

I didn't want to jump to conclusions...I was just a little angry. (which is understood, right?)

I would recommend that you only register your domain name with companies who are either ICANN accredited or have the tools to do a real-time lookup in the root database and will register the domain instantly in the root database (like OpenSRS resellers). If a registrar does this, you will not have to worry about issues like this. The root database can be queried in real-time to see if a domain is available and once the domain is registered, it will show-up instantly as registered in the root database.

<Just saw the reply by Aaliyah>

Did they say what happened and why the domain was registered under their name?

I didn't even bother to ask. I'm just happy the whole thing is straightened out.
I'm not trying to talk bad about them or accuse them of anything. I was just trying to figure out what I could do and if it had ever happened to anyone else. My brother registered his name through them the same time I did and his came out fine. It must've been a mix up or something.
I have my name now so everything is fine. :)

Have you considered the possibility that you either did not supply the correct information or misinterpreted the whois results?

I know their server info is entered by default and you can change it later. The same may have happened with the registrant.

At any rate, one of the great things about 000domains.com, which applies to any Open SRS reseller, is that you can change anything, including the registrant, using their Domain Manager.

All's well that ends well.

Aaliyah, was the other company openSRS ? If so, maybe there is an explanation for this mystery :)

Registrars do have some weird behaviors sometimes. Just 2 days ago I was moving a customer's DNS on Register.com, and the transaction was supposed to delete register.com's DNS and add mine instead. The end result: regsiter.com's DNS servers were deleted, and mine were NOT added! The domain had no DNS entries at all. A support ticket to register.com fixed this quickly, but I never understood why this happend. Oh well...
