View Full Version : Starting Windows but not 98??!
PencWeb 03-01-2002, 07:28 AM Hi every1,
I don't know why the heck this does this, but when I start my computer, after the DOS part, it goes to a screen with just a blinking cursor at the top left corner for a minute, then it goes to my desktop.. anyone know why it's not showing the WINDOWS 98 screen when it loads? :-p Very odd!
Oh, and also.. Right before it gets to my desktop, it shows a login form, and has my name in the Username field, but no password, and it doesn't make me fill in the pass field, so I can either press OK or cancel, and it always goes right to my desktop. ;) But how do I make this window NOT become once I start up? It's kinda annoying. :-p I tried going in Control Panel>Passwords, but nothing helps me out there - hopefully someone can help me out, thanks guys (and girls!). ;)
peace out,
- Shawn
As for the startup screen.. i dunno, the file is logo.sys in c:\windows i believe.. maybe it got deleted or corrupted, no clue really, try replacing it with one off of the CD. As for the password thing.. go into your network settings in control panel and change the login settings to "Windows Login" instead of "Login for Microsoft Networks". Something along those lines.. I'm in XP now so I can't give you exact instructions but thats basically what you need to do.. Control Panel>Network>Windows Login.

cheesysticks 03-01-2002, 03:44 PM try playing with
[Options]
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
in msdos.sys
but make sure you DO NOT change the size of the file!
location c:/
you will have to enable viewing of system files to view it then untick hidden and read only to change it.
:D

Hehehe... Do you actually want to be remined of the OS you are using every time it needs to boot.... :D
There are a few programs out there that can fix this problem. There are also some programs that allow you to use one of *your* own pictures as the startup screen, instead of the Windows screen without affecting your computer's performance.
I dont have the links offhand about this but I can get some. I have done this before, and imagine the look on peoples face when they see your computer booting with a pic of you our your gf/bf instead of the Windows screen.
Just my $0.02
cheesysticks 03-01-2002, 04:10 PM there are a lot of good "plugins" to thwart the M$ :D
another one i like a whole lot is :
setup win98
then do the install
oops, i aint got no s no, ***t!
crl alt del
safe mode
regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProductID\
xxxxx-OEM-xxxxxxx-xxxxx
reboot.
oops!:stickout
how many people paid £75 instead of doing that then?
but yeah, that M$ screen realy SUCKS!:stickout
PencWeb 03-01-2002, 05:45 PM Hi Justin, cheesysticks, and Jerry,
Thanks for your help, all of ya. ;) I got the login thing cleared, and I know what to edit in the msdos.sys file, it's labeled:
logo=0
So I changed it to 1, but it won't let me save it, cause it's a read-only file, and I'm pretty sure it's hidden. :-p
you will have to enable viewing of system files to view it then untick hidden and read only to change it.
Yeah, how do I go about doing that? That's all I need to know, and I'm all set. ;)

Yeah, you do have a point there. :rolleyes:
But since I am now converting to using a PC, it really doesn't matter to me, I'm not sick of the Windows 98 logo (yet atleast). Before this, I was using a Mac (please, no comments! hehe) and so now I would like to see the normal start-up way W98 is suppose to be. ;)

Nah that's ok, thanks anyway. :) I don't have a g/f (yet), but that would be really cool to have a pic of a hot girl I know on my W98 startup! :D *lol*

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean? But I sure am curious! Can you be a bit more specific of what you're talking about? Thanks. :) I'm guessing, you're installing a version of Windows, 'without' needing the serial number? Well if I'm right, I understand your last sentence then. ;)
Alrite, thanks again everyone..

cheesysticks 03-01-2002, 06:01 PM Change the file from read only and system to "normal" by right clicking on the file and properties, then uncheck the appropriate tick, but do not ever change the size and put the permissions back to what they were after you save.
> Yes;)
PencWeb 03-01-2002, 06:02 PM I was able to find how to edit the msdos.sys file, and now it's working how I want it to, yay! ;)
Add the following to the end of autoexec.bat
win
PencWeb 03-02-2002, 01:26 AM Yeah thanks, working perfect now! ;)

goto msdos command prompt and type this command
attrib -srh msdos.sys
(remove system readonly and hidden attributes).
then after editing you may type this command to revert it to original status
attrib +srh msdos.sys
:)
PencWeb 03-02-2002, 12:17 PM ahh, i see. well, i got it working, so i don't need to do that anymore - i found an easier way. ;)
thanks every1,
