Hello,

Nothing is free :) .

Even yes, Web Hosting company that gives away free domain will require you to order the hosting package.

Some hosts will offer a free domain if you sign up for certain a hosting plan.

Also free domains sometimes come with other restrictions. You are really better off to pay the few $ to Namecheap or Godaddy or other reliable registrar or reseller.

There are places selling names as little as 4.00.

Well.. You dont get domain like .net or .com(etc.) for free.
Some hosting companies provide them for free but only if you take their hosting package.
SO i could recommend you some free domain redirect + E-Mail forward:

(1)
Go to www.freedomain.co.nr to get a domain like www.YOURDOMAIN.co.nr

(2)
Go to www.dot.tk to get a domain like www.YOURDOMAIN.tk
and E-mail forward like ABC@YOURDOMAIN.tk .
They provide 5 e-mails.

Rest are (c j b . n e t) for YOURDOMAIN.c j b . n e t but they are subdomains.(Remove the spaces)
Hope that helps...

Guys i dont think $10/year is such a big deal. Instead of drinking a couple of beers buy a domain. :-P

ilias
03-10-2005, 07:37 AM
thanks mate.

For the 4$ domain, what 's the trick? ;)

I think that what i have to check before buyting a domain is:
- the price to transfer
- the dns manager
- the price next year! ;)

What do you think about that?

you get what you pay for. Companies selling that close to cost cant possibly afford much of anything... including support, telephone, staff, food etc. If they are selling that cheap they are suplementing income by selling your info or some other behind the scenes stuff to turn profit...

Remember registrars have to pay Icann a fee everytime they register a domain. Does anyone know what that fee is? I think it may be around $5, but not sure.

oswebhosting

On my invoices it shows Icann fee of $0.25 for wach transaction but I am sure it is more than that, i think thats just an "extra" fee.

Do you know netfirms.com, myvaluehost.com and domainsarefree.com?

Does it really matter that much for a dollar or two per YEAR??

ilias

2$ in a 5$ .com name represents smthg like 40% of the price.... ;) So if you are palnning to buy 10 names or more....
For example:
10 names at 7.95$ each represent about 20 names at 4$
10________ 6.95$ ____________ about 17 __________
etc..... ;)

Well, the real question is : where is the trick? and can you leave that registrar without paying a huge amount of money! (i heard about that with register.com!!). That's the main think.

ilias
03-15-2005, 10:06 AM
but i understand that there might be more to lose than the few bucks you can save.... And that's why i m asking if smeone has compared netfirms.com, myvaluehost.com and domainsarefree.com .... ;)

A DNS manager? Have you tried one of those dynamic DNS sites? Most of those are free. Beware of spywares though.

With registrars, if you're looking to develop the site, you really should find a registrar that you trust, than the cheapest registrar you can find -- IMHO anyway. :)

p.s. And yes, like someone mentioned, do check-out the .TK (http://nic.tk/) domains.

ilias
03-17-2005, 09:16 AM
in fact i don't want to host my domain with them, i only wanna buy 5 domains, then put the dns of my host in them. but i m afraid if i can't transfer the domain for free. And usually the tos isnt enough clear. That's why i ask here...;)

which register is the the best according to you?

thanks mates,

The real cost to register domain name is:
$6.00 - to top level registry operator that operates entire database of .com or .net , ext.
$0.25 - new fee to ICANN
$0.24 - ICANN accreditation $0.24-$2.00 if use someone else or $20,000+ *
$0.44 - credit card transaction rate (2.2% + $0.30)
$ ? - cost of operations
$ ? - Profit. !!! Where is the beef ?
----------
$6.94 not including cost of operations and profit

* - for getting your own accreditation (time, licensing, equipment); you will need to register 100,000 to even get your initial money back by charging $0.24 or so)

Most companies will only let you register for 1 year thinking that after first year you will stay with them and renew at then current price, that way they recover money at the time when they will decide that they got enough business and it came time to cash-in on their customer base. In most cases its done gradually if the company is smart.

--------------------------
I am thinking in starting domain registration service seeing how much some people struggle with some companies when they trying to do what they need for their business interests.

But How to I attract and keep customers happy even if I offer $6.99 - $7.49 price? (my cost of operation is not that high)

I know how to make large hosting companies, I had sold two few years back.

Thanks AlphaOne for your precisions.
So, with who have i to register? Registerfly?Ev1?1and1?
Seems that the other 5.99 and less registrars are not so efficient... ;)
Thanks...

For that, i think that to attract me for example, you need:
-be very clear about the fees and other hidden costs
-propose forwarding and dns services , or why not better 4 or 5 emails redirections and a 10mb free webspace.
That's for me of course.
-fast and efficient hotline
-honesty ;)

But i think that main point which is not enough explained is the TOS and the REAL costs of a domain.... just check 1and1 or other registrars, you have to click a lot or even to ask the hotline to know the exact cost of a domain the first year, and ESPECIALLY THE YEARS AFTER !! ;)

Definitely no ads in URL forwardings/maskings -- eNom used to do it until I explicitly asked them to switch it off. It was annoying because I don't recall they ever mentioned it during my sign up. So who got paid for the ad-clicks? I don't know, certainly not me.

Oh, and dynamic DNS thing is a huge turn on, but not a must.

I also agree that all the hidden costs should be there and crystal clear. I don't mind paying a few extra as long as I know what to expect. I hate surprises in payments.

And um, payments with PayPal should be available, and easy to use. :)

Well, dalechou, i want to register 5 domains, what do you think is the best now (before the the futur company of alphaOne!;)

1and1 has bad working practices, just search this forum, even if 5.99 looks like a good price - I'd stay away.

All the companies that i know, that offer $3.99-$6 price, don't have unified domain management, i.e. You will need to make separate account for reach domain and re-login each time. Only one in that price range is 1and1 has all domain in one place but there is no exporation date anywhere in the interface - and again they have problems in their interface and run unprofessionally. Their domain and billing policies are inappropriate.

what TLDs are those domains ?

AbsolutelyFreeWeb

back to the initial question. A free domain, you can get .tk for free.

You can also try to sell affiliate products, earn som $$ and be able to pay a domain.

AlphaOne
03-21-2005, 06:38 PM
Difficult to say which domains the original poster were looking for, but most likely he were looking for TLD like .com .net .org ...

Unless you are in .tk geographic location its pointless to use that ccTLD. Difficult to do business under that kind of name. Everyone will go "Where the hell is that.."

More to the point: There is no free lanch that you would eat..

ilias
03-22-2005, 12:43 PM
HEllo mates,
For the tld it's 4 .coms and 1 .net ;)
I am convinced now, i ll go to the 6.5 domains like ev1 or registerfly if they give us a coupon ;) (i v been in the members site, no coupon for now;)

well, thanks mates !

ev1 has stopped to sell only domains...

and alphaone even with a good set of services and prices, you will see everyone just saying the same thing over and over again. it does'nt matter your prices are lower than godaddys, it doesnt matter your private registration is more safe than registerflys, it doesnt matter you give more services with each domain than directi..

you can never beat the loss leaders in price. and people will continue to suggest the big registrars for eachother...
